About the Author
John Dickson Carr (1906 1977) was one of the most popular authors of Golden Age British-style detective novels.Born in Pennsylvania and the son of a US congressman, Carr graduated from Haverford College in 1929.Soon thereafter, he moved to England where he married an Englishwoman and began his mystery-writing career. In 1948, he returned to the US as an internationally known author.Carr received the Mystery Writers of America s highest honor, the Grand Master Award, and was one of the few Americans ever admitted into the prestigious, but almost exclusively British, Detection Club.

It's Okay

I knew nothing about Doyle before reading this and there is a fair amount of useful information about the author's life. Unfortunately, it is not particularly well written. The author uses childish "but more about that later" transitions to create suspense. Also, Carr like many biographers falls in love with his subject. Sherlock Holmes stories are not the summum of English language literature. Carr vastly overates Doyle as a writer, but not as a man. This is a book that you should pick up at a used book sale for 50 cents.

Some listings of biographical archives appear at the end of the book. Charles Doyle, the father, was by profession an architect. Charles Doyle liked fishing. Arthur was educated by the Jesuits at Stonyhurst. At age 15 he visited relatives in London and was a rabid sight-seer. He studied in Germany for one year. He went to medical school at the University of Edinburgh, living at home. It was 1876 when he began.

At holiday on the Isle of Arran in 1877 he met Dr. Joseph Bell. Bell used his powers of deduction to impress the students. Conan Doyle took his medical degree in 1881 and signed on to be a ship's physician on a voyage to the Gold Coast, the west coast of Africa. Arthur's London relatives were prepared to do him favors but they believed in the teachings of the Catholic Church and he did not. He decided to open a practice in Portsmouth. His mother and aunt supplied him with furniture.

In 1883 one of Arthur's stories was accepted by CORNHILL MAGAZINE. He joined the literary and scientific society. A commission from the Gresham Life Insurance Company helped his income. The more he saw of medical practice, the more he turned to writing. He learned that he could write fiction that readers would take for absolute truth. He worked by fits and starts. He married a Miss Hawkins. Her mother lived with the couple. Married life stimulated his mental powers.

A STUDY IN SCARLET as written in 1886. He sold the copyright for twenty five pounds. His favorite writers were Stevenson and Meredith. The book of his he prized was THE WHITE COMPANY. He put a vast amount of research into it. THE SIGN OF FOUR appeared in 1896. Two Holmes series were brought out in 1891 and 1892. The stories ran in THE STRAND MAGAZINE.

He moved to Davos, Switzerland for the sake of his wife's health. Conan Doyle introduced skiing as a sport in Switzerland. On an American visit he saw Kipling in Vermont. He met Jean Leckie in 1897 and fell wildly in love. He fought the devil for ten years. He steadied himself by reading Renan. In a new study at his house called Undershaw he determined to bring back Sherlock Holmes. He wrote a play and sent it to Beerbohm Tree. William Gilette, an American, was interested in playing the part. The actor infected Conan Doyle with his own enthusiasm. He spent about five months in South Africa at the time of the Boer War manning a hospital dealing with a fever epidemic. He received a knighthood.

In 1907 he married Jean Leckie. After World War I and the loss of his oldest son Conan Doyle pursued the cause of Spritiualism. Sherlock Holmes was revived again in HIS LAST BOW.

About the Author
Chad Meyer is an American with BS degrees in computer science, electrical engineering, and math, as well as several years' experience teaching in the New York area.

Kim Moon-jung is a Korean who majored in art before going to study graphic design in the US, where she also worked for a newspaper. Chad and Moon-jung fell in love and got married, and following a number of visits to Korea, they ended up relocating to Seoul in 2007. Chad's deep interest in Korean culture led him to contribute articles about Korean food to the English-language daily the Korea Times. Since 2008, Chad and Moon-jung have been writing the Easy to Learn Korean series for the Korea Times.

Putting Some Fun into Learning Korean

If you're struggling like I am trying to learn Korean, this book will not only be informative but bring a little fun into the endeavor. I am currently working with two other language programs and purchased this guide because it appeared to begin with words and phrases instead of sentences (which are too difficult for me to grasp when just starting out). The book is divided into categories so that the reader can concentrate on a particular area of interest. I will be using it, also, as a reference book for years to come. Since one author's native language is English and the other is of Korean decent, there is a greater understanding of the approach to be used in introducing a language. I feel that with this book I've discovered something better, for me, than the two methods I've been using.

Fantastic! A must need for learning Korean.

This book has all of the basic information you need to learn about Korea. The pictures are entertaining and there's a ton of practical advice. I started teaching myself Korean last week after learning that I'll be moving there in the next few months. This book will give you translations for common phrases and advice on practical situations.

Basic Korean 101 with Pictures

Face it, learning Korean is a challenge. This book, by an American ex-pat and his Korean wife not only help the reader with the language basics, with Korean, English and phonetic translation and cute images, but also provides visiting and survival tips for those that want to make Seoul less intimidating. The authors tend to follow the guidelines of Korean culture (out of love and respect) and do provided sound bites of culture, custom, and the odd ways of the country. Their city guide to mass transit is the best I've read.

David Dyment teaches political science at the University of Ottawa and at Carleton University, has served on the staff of the governor general of Canada, and was a senior policy adviser in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. As a media commentator, he has been heard on CTV, CBC Television and Radio, Radio-Canada (in French), and BBC. He received his doctorate from the Universit� de Montr�al.

Whose Afraid of the Elephant?

In `Doing the Continental' political scientist David Dyment dissects the US-Canadian relationship. He confronts myths (Avro Arrow), challenges sacred cows (trade in water) and skewers both sides of the ideological divide (right-continentalist; left-nationalist). In a personal critique he places the national psyche on the couch and encourages Canadians to replace their fears and prejudices with the asymmetric reality of this relationship (i.e. Canada is vitally important to the US but is effectively under the radar of US politicians). This, he states, is an opportunity rather than a threat. It leads to a focus on the mundane productive work of relationship building with US Congressional allies and between US-Canadian business and bureaucratic experts on a myriad of issues to `manage the relationship' on an ongoing basis - and to largely ignore the grandstanding summitry of the PM/Presidential relationship which is basically immaterial. This book is a welcome antidote to more strident works looking to `solve' problems in the US-Canada relationship - which works far better in reality than in theory.
