About the Author

H. Scott Fogler is Vennema Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research interests include flow and reaction in porous media, fused chemical relations, gellation kinetics, colloidal phenomena, and catalyzed dissolution. Fogler has chaired ASEE's Chemical Engineering Division, served as director of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and earned the Chemical Manufacturers Association's National Catalyst Award.

Steven E. LeBlanc is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Chemical Engineering at The University of Toledo. He previously served as the chair of the Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department for ten years. LeBlanc has served as the Chairman of the ASEE Chemical Engineering Education Division and currently is serving as a co-Chair of the ASEE Chemical Engineering Summer School for Faculty to be held in Summer 2007. He also serves on the Publication Board for Chemical Engineering Communications.

Great book

I purchased this text book and it is great book for the class that I am takeing. The book does a great job at breaking down the thought process behind solving problems. Explaining how we miss the solution to a problem by looking at the wrong part of the issue. Many times we over analyze things so much that we cant see the most simple things.

Well organized, and entertaining intro to problem solving

This is a systematic and well organized introduction. I used it with managers and students not just engineers. What was important was not just to follow an algorithmic approach but to imbue a way of thinking. It simply is not true that everyone has formed the discipline to use their mind following these or similar heuristics. We may stumble on them naturally, I agree. But for many people this is a useful revelation. In addition to the book, they have produced software to engage you in learning the problem strategies. Compared to many other books on the subject, this book has enough real world examples and strategies that it is not just pop psychology or wishful thinking or one more brainstrom with web-like diagrams.

This book is absolutely not for engineers.

This review is for the first edition, but too much is wrong for the second edition to correct.

This book talks about taking risks and looking for paradigm shifts and synergizing your lateral-thinking hoobahooba MBA jargon nonsense. Its example of problem solving heuristic is

Define the Problem
Generate Solutions
Decide the Course of Action
Implement the Solution
Evaluate the Solution

Then it gives no concrete guidance on doing any of them. It actually suggests looking for wise employees ("Go talk to George" the cartoon owl) whose experience will include an existing solution. By that logic, it should explain how to hire people to just solve all our problems for us.

It is well organized; like a fourth grader's math book -- complete with pointless cartoon airplanes in the margins. The examples (as many business/marketing as engineering) have zero analysis, but instead jump non-sequitur to conclusions that, of course, support whatever vaporous jargon is on that page. It basically reads like a self-help seminar.

Amid ridiculous single-page introductions to flowcharts and fishbone diagrams, the only technique I found novel was the Duncker Diagram -- and I had to go to Google to get any details. In the end, some version of these tips might be useful to children, but this is not a guide to systematic problem solving. If you want a book on marketing-type creativity, I suggest How to Get Ideas. If you want structured problem solving techniques, I'm still looking for something better than Wikipedia.

Vessey is professor emeritus of biological sciences at Bowling Green State University. He is the coauthor of Animal Behavior: Mechanisms, Ecology, Evolution. Joseph F. Merritt is a senior mammalogist with the Illinois Natural History Survey, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and the editor of the Journal of Mammalogy. And the Reason for Publishing Is....?

Leonard, of course, is an acknowledged master of at least two genres: the western and the gritty urban crime novel. At some point in his career he wove in another genre, the dufus comic pop novel as the crimes migrated beyond Detroit to Hollywood and Florida. The earlier characters could be somewhat archetypal -- or, more critically -- stock, but without losing their archetypal flavor the later characters, like Rylans, were deliberately exaggerated and individualized.

I'm beginning this review a little off the subject of the stories in the current collection to remind myself how good and special Leonard's writing came to be because these early (?) stories range from predictable to embarrassingly awful. They were either apprentice work or, if they were later (many of them aren't even dated so who knows?) they were efforts -- as an other reviewer noted -- that deserved to stay in the drawer.

Every good artist produces bad work from time to time. It's inevitable because the only way you get better is by practicing your art and no matter who you are the statistics catch up with you. Produce enough masterpieces like Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" and "In a Silent Way" and eventually there will be "Doo-Bop."

There are a few reasons for ever letting this stuff see the light after the artist's death. One is that when an artist is important enough -- and Leonard is surely sufficiently important for this to apply -- scholars can better understand the artist by seeing what failure looks like. Younger writers can see how Leonard's mature career developed from a genre novelist's rather ordinary beginnings --through immense amounts of practice. And also, I suppose, completists (and I'm not one) who love an artist enough want to get all they can.

But the value of this book is seriously diminished because of what I have to suspect is a cynical and unworthy motive--publishing every last drop to maximize profit. If Harper Collins had something better in mind, why the casual omission of any biographical materials that would have explained the circumstances of each story. Many of them are even undated, which is taking casual all the way to shoddy. I'm guessing the dated stories were published but not later collected and that the undated stories were never published at all. Regarding them, were they ever submitted to a publisher? More than once? Were there just rejection slips or no record of what happened at all or did any of the publisher's readers respond personally with something that Leonard readers might have found interesting. What did Leonard think about these stories eventually being collected and published? Some writers don't want their failures published ever, others have a more tolerant view.

All and all, from a scholarly perspective, this collection fails almost entirely. And lacking a scholarly justification for publishing it, Harper Collins and the estate would have served Leonard (and book buyers generally) better by keeping these off the market. These stories aren't going to diminish Leonard's reputation, finally, but they do diminish Harper Collins'.

How could you do this to us?

Elmore Leonard has been my favorite author for decades. His books line my walls. I have given many more away to friends. This book of things that he chose not to publish should have remained right where he left them. This stuff isn't fit to pirnt. To all the budding authors I've worked with over the years who were never published, I have to say that none of you ever presented anything for review to our groups that was this poor. The great news is that Leonard went from this terrible stuff to some really great work and a long career as a very entertaining writer.

Adjust your Expectations: Mediocre Elmore Leonard is still better than most

The stories here are very uneven. Some of them just seem like first drafts that were forgotten but a few are quite engrossing. I think all the bad reviews are because people expect this to be as good as most of what Leonard writes, which doesn't make a lot of sense given these stories were all unpublished. If you are an Elmore Leonard fanatic like me and have read everything he's ever written then I think this is definitely worth reading. If not, then there are many better short novels and stories to start with. I would recommend: Ride the Rap, Pronto, La Brava, just off the top of my head as some great Leonard novels to start with.

You will read the poems again and again!

I never read Loretta's poetry (or talk with her, for that matter) without being so impressed her wisdom, artistry and amazing good humor. She has been through a lot (witness a line from "Whipped," one of the wonderful poems in this volume: "The good old days were only good/ for those who had the goods"), but she always seems to have great quantities of courage, perseverance, and wit to share with the world. Buy this book! You will enjoy reading all her poems, not just once, but many times over!

Fixed nitrogen (which is immediately usable to plants) is essential in agriculture. Its rarity, as science writer Hager (The Demon Under the Microscope) shows, dramatically shaped the world and its politics. But by 1905, as Hager details, German chemist Fritz Haber discovered a process for transforming abundant air-borne nitrogen into ammonia, and Carl Bosch's ingenious engineering scaled Haber's benchtop chemistry into industrial processes to make fertilizer. But Hager's story is not only one of triumph, of how Haber and Bosch invented a way to turn air into bread, earning a Nobel Prize and saving millions from starvation. This is also a story of irony and tragedy. First, life-saving nitrogen is also the main ingredient in explosives, and Hager cogently summarizes the Haber-Bosch process's critical role in both world wars. In addition, Hager illustrates Haber's extreme German patriotism and desperate wish to assimilate; shattered by the rise of Hitler, he became an outcast, abandoned even by his onetime colleague Bosch. A fast-paced account of the early-20th-century quest to develop synthetic fertilizer. Today hundreds of factories convert atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia in order to manufacture the artificial fertilizers that make modern-day agricultural yields possible. They are based on the technological advance known as the Haber-Bosch process, developed prior to World War I by the German chemists and Nobel laureates Fritz Haber (1868–1934) and Carl Bosch (1874–1940). Hager (The Demon Under the Microscope: From Battlefield Hospitals to Nazi Labs, One Doctor’s Heroic Search for the World’s First Miracle Drug, 2006, etc.) offers a superb narrative of these brilliant men and their scientific discovery. Around the turn of the century, the world faced a shortage of the fixed nitrogen needed to provide food for a growing population. Hager sets the stage by describing the world’s reliance in the 19th century on nitrates from Peru and Chile that could be used as natural fertilizer or to make gunpowder, and finds plenty of human drama in the battles to control the lucrative international trade. Determined to help end Germany’s dependence on South American nitrates, Bosch and Haber worked at the German chemical company BASF to find a way to convert nitrogen into ammonia. Bosch developed the process, and Haber designed bigger industrial plants. By 1944, the Haber-Bosch factory at Leuna—a primary target for U.S. bombers—occupied three square miles and employed 35,000 workers. The author not only illuminates the scientists’ complex work, but also digs into their personal lives. Bosch, a melancholic with a huge villa in Heidelberg, asked Hitler to spare Jewish scientists for the sake of German chemistry and physics (the Fuhrer replied: “Then we’ll just have to work 100 years without physics and chemistry!”). Haber, a Jew, developed the chlorine gas used in World War I, sought a way to extract gold from the oceans to pay off German war reparations and conducted research that led to the development of the Zyklon B gas used in Nazi death camps. Biographer and science writer Thomas Hager has written or edited five books on medicine and science, most recently The Demon Under the Microscope. Hes the author of two books on Linus Pauling, including the acclaimed biography, Force of Nature: The Life of Linus Pauling. He lives in Eugene, Oregon.

Greatly important slice of history!

This was a very good read - 4.5 stars. Author Thomas Hager is engaging, clear, and he held my interest. The subjects - renowned German chemists (and Nobel laureates) Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch developed what could be argued as the most important chemical process in human history - Nitrogen Fixation via the Haber-Bosch process. Nitrogen fixation - creating ammonia essentially from air (nitrogen and hydrogen) allowed for the production of both fertilizer and high explosives. World-wide fertilizer distribution in turn created the green revolution and has allowed the world's population to explode from less than 2 to over 6 billion (and growing), with the average person going from a marginal existence to an "over-eater". It has also contributed to nitrogen pollution of world-wide waters, ecological destruction, and climate change. High explosives greatly helped create the horrors of both World Wars and countless smaller conflicts, killing many, many millions. It is close to impossible to overstate the importance of this discovery.
As the author details, Haber and Bosch were fascinating, driven, and complicated men. They lived in a time of great upheaval. And they came to understand much of the bad, as well as great significance of their work. My one concern about the book is the range of subjects touched upon and consequent short discussion of a lot of it. Author Thomas Hager had enough important topics and material to write perhaps half a dozen good books. More detail could have been used on the chemistry involved, the moral dilemmas, the Jewish-Nazi interaction (Haber was Jewish), Bosch's synfuel development, and other topics. Despite this minor qualm, I recommend this book as one from which a lot will be learned.

Great story but needs better editing

This was an extremely interesting story and well worth the read; I learned a great deal about the dramatic influence that science and industrialization had on geopolitics during the 20th century. I have to also mention, however, that the author didn't seem to balance the arc of story very well. The balance between the lives of the principal characters and their scientific context started to unravel about two-thirds the way through the book and the sundry elements the author had researched, along w the chemistry, were kind of jammed in at the end. With a better editor this very good book, with a great story to tell, would be excellent.

A must read for those who wish to understand the effects of science and engineering on modern history.

This book is a history of the Haber-Bosch process for converting hydrogen and nitrogen gas into nitrates, which is estimated to take 1% of the world’s energy. Without its fertilizers, a couple of billion people probably would have starved to death. Without its explosives Germany could not have completed WW1 or carried out WW2. Hager discusses the history of the use of nitrates for explosives and fertilizer - starting with mining of bird droppings and other natural deposits in South America. For a few decades that was satisfactory until the natural supply ran out. Haber won a Nobel prize for developing his process, for artificially creating nitrates from air and lots of energy, a couple of years before his friend Albert Einstein won his. The technical challenges for breaking the extremely strong bond of atmospheric nitrogen (N2), to combine it with hydrogen and get ammonia (NH3) is well described. Later Haber sullied his reputation by implementing poison gas warfare in WW1.

Bosch developed the technology and factories to scale up this process on a large scale for which he later won a Nobel prize. The scale was immense, costing more than the American Manhattan Project. The fate of both men and their industry under Hitler makes a compelling read. The scientist (Haber) was Jewish and in wanting to be a good German sold his soul to the devil - the tycoon was forced to work under the Nazis for whom he had contempt. Their effect on history was immense for both good and evil.

About the Author

Dr. Matthew Ganis, a member of IBM’s Academy of Technology, is currently an IBM Senior Technical Staff Member located in Somers, New York. His current areas of interest include social media analytics, the Internet of Things, and Agile software methodologies. He is an adjunct professor of computer science and astronomy at Pace University in Pleasantville, New York, where he teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Dr. Ganis holds a BS degree in computer science and an MBA in information systems from Pace University, an MS degree in astronomy from the University of Western Sydney, Australia, and a doctorate of professional studies in computing from Pace University. He has authored or co-authored over 40 papers in both of his fields of interest, ranging from programming techniques, computer system administration, computer networking, and topics on stellar evolution and radio astronomy. Patricia Bromley, Assistant Professor of Public Administration, University of Utah,John W. Meyer, Stanford University, Emeritus Professor of Sociology

Patricia Bromley is an Assistant Professor of Public Administration/Political Science at the University of Utah. Her work focuses on the rise and globalization of a culture emphasizing rational, scientific thinking and expansive forms of rights. She draws mainly on two settings - education systems and organizations - to show how the institutionalization of these new cultural emphases transforms societies worldwide. She received a doctoral degree from Stanford University's School of Education also studies changes to civic education curricula in countries around the world.


John W. Meyer is Professor of Sociology (and, by courtesy, Education), emeritus, at Stanford. He has contributed to organizational theory, comparative education, and the sociology of education, developing sociological institutional theory. Since the 1970s, he has studied the impact of global society on national states and societies In 2003 he completed a collaborative study of worldwide science and its national effects. A more recent collaborative project is on the impact of globalization on organizational structures. He now studies the world human rights regime, world curricula in mass and higher education, and the worldwide expansion of formal organization. He is a member of the National Academy of Education, has honorary doctorates from the Stockholm School of Economics and the Universities of Bielefeld and Lucerne, and received the American Sociological Association's section awards for lifetime contributions to the sociology of education, and to the study of globalization.
