About the Author
Since 1973, Rick Steves has spent about four months a year exploring Europe. His mission: to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable, and culturally broadening. Rick produces a best-selling guidebook series, a public television series, and a public radio show, and organizes small-group tours that take over 20,000 travelers to Europe annually. He does all of this with the help of a hardworking, well-traveled staff of 100 at Rick Steves' Europe in Edmonds, Washington, near Seattle. Great book for a cruise

I always buy Rick Steves' book about wherever I am planning to travel. Lots of good general information as well as detailed descriptions of where and how to get around, sightsee, eat, and shop. This book is just what I needed for a Scandanavian cruise as it describes cruise port cities, not the whole country. It contains instructions for cutting it apart into very small books, one for each port city, so there is no need to bring the whole thing....only those cities you will actually visit. I can't comment on the usefullness of the information in this particular book yet, as my trip is next week, but all previous Rick Steve books have proved invaluable when sightseeing otherwide unguided. There are also chapters about choosing, booking, packing for, and boarding a cruise ship if you haven't done that before.

How NOT to get lost and see the BEST sights!

We just completed a 12 day Baltic cruise. Followed his walking tour every step in Tallinn, Estonia. Every step, every turn was spot on. I read his commentary on upcoming destinations the night before and was always prepared for the best choices. Best guidebook ever. Gear job, guys. PS: I saw many others with the same book.

Fantastic book! I'll post an updated review after our Baltic Sea Cruise but thus far I have nothing but positive comments about this book. Easy to read, designed to be sectioned so you don't have to carry the entire book on each outing, great tips and provided great info for us to make decisions regarding activities at each port we visit.

HILARIOUS....with a great message, too!

There are three of these books, and I love each and every one of them. We put off purchasing copies because the local library has them, but I figured when my kids (aged 4 and 6) shouted "THE LIBRARY IS OPEN WE NEED THOSE DARN SQUIRRELS" each time we drove past our town library (which is often!), that I should just man up and buy them. It's a hilarious book about a grouchy old man who hates everything except the birds in his yard, and what starts out as a comical story quickly ends as a poignant tale of friendship when the lonely old man is befriended by the very thing he hates most: those darn squirrels. We read this constantly at my house, and it never gets old for my husband and I, which is good because some children's books become mundane after the second or third read. The pictures are hilarious as well, and there are small nuances on each page that only make them funnier. I think that to enjoy these books you'll need a quirky sense of humor, though, so if you don't think funny old men in silly pants and sarcastic squirrels are funny, then it may not be for you. As for me, I'm buying the next two in the series! (I also read these books to my 6th grade classes, and they found them just as hilarious as I did.)

Cute for kids, not too boring for grown ups

My 5 year old loves all 3 of the Darn Squirrels books. He anxiously awaited the Cat Next Door, and was thrilled when it arrived. I had to read it twice in a row. He asked me if there were going to be more. I think he wants an entire series.
Fortunately, the books are silly, but not in a way an adult would find terribly dull. They aren't great literature, by far, but they're amusing and fun.
My son and I both shake our fists and shout, "Those darn squirrels," every time it shows up on the page. He thinks it's hilarious, and I think it's adorable.

LOVED this book, will read it often! Ordering the 2 sequels now

I think I remember why I bought "Those Darn Squirrels" yesterday. I'm looking for a book to read to my son's class, and am skipping through reviews on kids' books on Amazon, and came across this book. We have some bird feeders up and love squirrels and grumpy grandpa types :), the title was funny, the reviews were good, the summary seemed like it would be up our alley and the graphics looked very humorous and appealing. Tonight I read the book to dear son on kindle at bedtime, and we LOVED this book. GREAT illustrations, written REALLY WELL, funny, and sweet... After dear son went to sleep I handed it to dear husband and asked him to read it... he was reading it out loud to me and laughing, and told me to come write a review... while I'm here, I'm getting the 2 sequels for kindle, and I can see that we'll be reading those two sequels together laughing! Gosh, I really hope his class hasn't read this book yet, because I'd *love* to bring this in for 'guest reader day'!
p.s. We also think "Click. Clack. Moo." is really funny in our sense of humor, but this has even more going on in the story and in the pictures. We'll be reaching to this for gifts! Don't even hesitate to buy this book! Oh, and it's formatted really beautifully for kindle - easy to read the text, easy to see the illustrations...

Not Linear Algebra

I love this book. It contains a wealth of information on basic matrix theory that one almost never gets in the classroom or typical undergraduate texts. I never realised how rich the theory of matrix theory was until I read this book. Bare in mind, however, that this is not a text on linear algebra . . . the author does touch upon the subject, but even then it is linear algebra in the context of matrix theory and not matrices in the context of linear algebra. This is rather an old approach, but one I think that is very enlightening. The author touches on advanced topics such as Lie products, Hamilton products, tensor products and so on. I this way, the student learns that the traditional way of multiplying matrices is not the only way, but simply the way that linear algebra chooses to make use of the matrices. The level of the book is undegraduate, so that any intelligent high school student should be able to get much out of the book. No real math background is required, although it would be helpful. Theory is paid attention to, but a great deal of detail is also given worked out problems, making it ideal for math students who don't yet feel comfortable with advanced theoretical math.

Fantastic Souvenir

I love this book. The illustrations are bright, colorful and fun. The story is clever and flows very nicely. I adore both the author and illustrator.

I bought this as a souvenir for my daughter of our year spent in England because of all the British words in it. "Come to Tea" actually means come to lunch/dinner. They also use: biscuits=cookie, row=loud noise, jelly=jello, tucking in=sitting down to eat, and mummies=mommies.

No God, No Progress , No Self

STRAW DOGS is different from most books I read in that it is a significant work that deserves a wide audience.It's relatively short and clearly written.Gray doesn't believe in God , which is fashionable but you won't mistake him for a New Atheist.He isn't hostile to religion and finds the idea that eliminating it opens the way to human liberation, a bad joke. I note that some reviewers think that Gray's best points are also made by Richard Dawkins and Stephen Pinker , who do a better job.Actually ,I don't think any of these writers have much in common.Gray is the fiercest critic of the idea of progress I've encountered, at least among contemporary writers.He is also an implacable critic of what he calls humanism, something he defines rather broadly.For Gray , it's not just the usual suspects. Nietzsche,Wittgenstein,Heidegger and the Deconstructionists are also humanists according to Gray.For all of them , Man is the measure of all things.Gray argues that simply isn't so.There was world before man and will be.after him.I'm an admirer of Nietzsche but enjoyed Grays curt dismissal of the ubermensch, Nietzsche's great optimistic offering.Gray suggests we give another look at Schopenhauer, who he considers unjustly neglected.

Apparently Terry Eagleton has criticized the book as being more about straw men than straw dogs, arguing that the kind of rationalistic optimism Gray criticizes is long dead.Well ,yes and no.In this day where the fashionable pose is one of knowing irony,people would be afraid and embarrassed to express themselves in terms similar to John Stuart Mill, August Comte or Herbert Spencer.Further any form of rationalism is a bit suspect.Yet, rabid , moralistic progressivism remains rampant .Often,in strange forms. Peruse New Age literature and it's hard not to be struck by a strong current of thought that insists Humanity is about to undergo some kind of cosmic transformation into some new and I would say utterly incomprehensible higher realm.Skipping the moralistic aspect , take a look at Trans-humanism.In politics, the belief persists that if only we get it right- and we can get it right- that this or that wonderful and permanent outcome will be achieved.Gray , rather Grinch like points out, there are no permanent social or historical outcomes.

So if there is no God,no progress, no self and humanism is bunk , what does Gray leave you with? i can't resist quoting Leonard Cohen's STRANGER SONG- not very much , not even laughter. But that's okay,even if this isn't quite correct , you need to think about it. You've taken too much for granted .If nothing else Gray may help you survive certain particularly tedious conversations.Your talking to someone who you may like and even respect.Actually you may even agree with him.However you simply can't stand the tone of moralistic certitude in which your being addressed.You begin to think you're in THE EXORCIST confronting Lind Blair at her most possessed.The words hit you like what comes from Linda' s mouth and you fire back with a calm world weary critique of progress, humanism and moralism and feel better.Granted the person may never talk to you again but maybe it's for the best.

A roller coaster ride of lows and highs. Well, mostly lows...

As I began reading this book, I felt a deep sense of discomfort. All the magic, hope and anticipation for the advancement of the human race was categorically destroyed by the blatant honesty about our actual place in the realm of living things. A huge portion of my discomfort was the idea that consciousness has a deluded and inflated importance place upon it by Humans. But as I read on, I understood John Gray's position on consciousness a lot more. The basis for the faith and hope we place on the human race is stripped down to its mythical and religious roots and I saw how, even the most basic sense of superiority we humans have concerning our place in the universe, is a matter of prevailing trends in thought. What's more is that these trends may, in fact, be the natural mechanism by which "life goes on" with or without the survival of our species of primate.

Overall, I felt our insignificance keenly, but I also realized the freedom of knowing that whether "people" survive or not, life WILL go on. At the end of the book I just wanted to live more and appreciate all things until I'm gone. Because we gluttonous, planet destroying humans seem less important and all-important to me at the same time. And, because I get the privilege and the distracting curse of being conscious of that.
