The unrecognized state in Northern Cyprus unfolds through the analytical devices that she develops as she explores this polity's administration and raison d'�tre via affect theory. Challenging the boundaries between competing theoretical orientations, Navaro-Yashin crafts a methodology for the study of subjectivity and affect, and materiality and the phantasmatic, in tandem. In the process, she creates a subtle and nuanced ethnography of life in the long-term aftermath of war.

Widely regarded as one of the classics of post-war historical writing, this book shows how central the role of poverty has been throughout the history of Europe. It ranges across the period from the first millennium to the present day, casting a fresh and revealing perspective on the actions of individuals, groups and nations, and on the underlying nature of the greatest social changes the continent has experienced.

Professor Geremek shows how the rich and those in authority have always expressed mixed feelings about the poor, oscillating between pity and fear, compassion and revulsion. He examines why this should have been so and discusses the effects it had on private and public actions. Even in the Middle Ages, the author suggests, there was little sentimentality. Then the poor had functions, as the means of securing divine salvation through the giving of alms, and as contractors who would pray for their benefactors.

With the economic crises that afflicted Europe in the sixteenth century, mass proverty came to be seen as harmful and destabilizing, and new principles of modern poor relief were formulated to control it. But the scale of poverty was increasing: first through rural change and then through industrial change. If absolute poverty became less evident, the gap between rich and poor had become more manifest. It is here, Professor Geremek shows, that the utopian ideals of socialism were born. Unrest could be contained in state welfare schemes, or it could be manipulated into revolution and the poor once more enslaved - this time in the name of their own interests.

About the Author
Bronislaw Geremek was lecturer at the Sorbonne (1960-1965) were he also directed the Centre for Polish Civilization until 1966. In 1965 he was appointed head of the Research Unit on the History of Medieval Culture at the Polish Academy of Sciences. For the next twenty years he was closely involved in dissident circles in Poland, taking a central role in the founding of the Solidarity trade union in Gdansk in the early 1980s. Professor Geremek still plays an important role in Poland's politics while now continuing his teaching and research both in Warsaw and in Paris.

Poorly written, keep your money and buy a different book.

This ebook does contain snippets of good information, but few for 95 pages. I imagine if you condensed this book down to the essentials there is about five to ten pages of good information. The writing is aimless and at times distracted. The book reads more like a college application essay than a professionally written book. I was very disappointed in the overall professionalism and quality of the book.

Extremely Practical

Wow! This book was an easy read with very practical advice for managing a dental office. Dr. Anzalone keeps it interesting by telling you his story and encouraging the reader to avoid his mistakes. He covers topics like hiring staff with positive attitudes, beginning a relationship with a CPA, and marketing your practice. If you get 1-2 pieces of practical advice from this book it will be well worth the price. If you get ONLY 1-2 pieces of practical advice from this book, I will be surprised.

More like a pamphlet than an actual book. Very Basic Stuff.

Incredibly basic. It is a stretch to call this an actual book. It is more like a long pamphlet. Maybe 100 max. No page numbers. Would be a good read for a 4th year dental student for some very basic information. If you are already a dentist, you probably already know everything discussed in this book/pamphlet.

About the Author
Bill McKenna brings a life of intense experiences to the writing of this, his first book. While earning his bachelor's degree from Saint Mary's College in Moraga, California, he was awarded a black belt in a mixed martial art and started running a series of endurance races that culminated in the completion of the Western States one-hundred-mile run in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. While establishing a successful sales career, he continued pursuing various passions including skydiving, helicopter/airplane piloting, and yachting. More recently, he experienced a literal and figurative accident that inspired him to share his story. Raised in Chula Vista as the oldest boy in an Irish-Catholic family of twelve, he currently lives in Southern California.

Life, Love and Forgiveness

And how did I receive this book?
* It was given to me by Bill McKenna.
* Bill is one of twelve children
* Bill is the third oldest
* He learned Martial Arts by age 8
* Black belt by age 20
* Flew airplanes
* Helicopters
* Bought yacht in Mexico
* Become a billionaire
* Depressed
* Many failed relationships
* Ran races
* Sky dived
* And on St Pats Day Bill almost died when his parachute collapsed
* He grew up in a strict Irish Catholic family, and so did I.
Bill grew up as an angry child because one day he was wrestling with his dad and one day Bill accidently hit a "low spot" on his father and his father kicked him out of the room. After that, Bill heard his father beating up his mother and after that Bill lived in fear of his father and what might erupt at any moment every day of his life. Thus, Bill decided to spend as much time as he could away from the home to avoid conflict and beatings.
When Bill was 18 he finally left home.
Bill had a talent which involved dreams, where he could dream it and then it came true for him and his life.
Bill and Michelle are put together as a couple and she is an Intuitive, clairvoyant and very empathic. Since Bill fell in love with her and did not understand her he studied every book he could to help him find out how she could predict things and knows things before they even happened. Did you know that other people's thoughts or feelings can be felt by emphatics'? I knew this as I am an empathic myself.
In order to be intuitive we have to tune into our spirit guides and angels and Michelle was an expert at this. Bill however was not so good at it and needed to learn how to do this in order to understand things Michelle could do with her talent.
Bill talks about how hard it is to forgive others and in order to be healthy we all need to learn how to forgive even if the other person knows or does not know. On page 19, "it's like drinking poison and expecting the other person to get sick."
Bill learned young in life how to put up a wall between himself and others and especially his father. This lesson Bill learned and is a gift and in order to heal we must forgive others and stop putting up a wall even if it means confronting the one whom needs forgiving. This in turn heals our souls.
"Resentments are emotionally keeping us handcuffed to the other person." Now that is such a great truth. If we resent a person we have not forgiven the other person. Thus, forgiveness and unconditional love are needed in order to be complete and whole as a person.
At the end of each chapter Bill gives all of the lessons he has learned for example on page 23:
A major block to accessing intuition is not forgiving.
I get no real life benefits from retained resentments.
I can forgive and not condone.
I am punished when I do not forgive, not the person that needs forgiving.
Forgiveness is a gift for me.
My resentments handcuffed me to the very people I did not want to be connect to.
Resentments shrink our world and create a prison for us.
When I forgive it changes me and the other person.
When I forgive I become free to go where I want when I want.
The people that I needed to give were here to help and teach me.

The Best Summary of the Lessons on the NDE I Have Read

I am an expert on NDEs and facilitate the Los Angeles chapter of the International Association for Near-Death Studies. Never have I seen a person articulate and live lessons from the NDE more completely than Bill McKenna in The Only Lesson. He is right on when he says that our lives are meant to teach us that our real nature is Love and the purpose of our lives is to learn to love everyone - including ourselves - unconditionally!

A Real Eye Opener!

After reading this book, the author has apparently had a life filled with incredible adventures and hurdles. In reading it, many things in the back of my mind made me think, oh ya,... that makes sense! It has changed the way I now think about many things.

I now have a much better outlook on my life and how I think of everyone around me -and the things they do.
Thank you Bill McKenna for pouring your deepest feelings into the words in this book!
