A good basic introduction

This book doesn't really cover any principles or theory in accounting. It won't teach you the basics or how or why accounting is done the way it is in the real world. It is basically an instruction manual for the software program that is included on the disc. However, the software provides a good initial exposure to electronic accounting systems. Not overly complicated. Has good screenshots and examples. You can also use the software to set up your personal finances or do accounting for your home business. The book consists primarily of a series of self-test problems. The only reason I gave it a medium rating is because I would not want anyone to purchase this book thinking they are going to get an education in actual accounting. It is simple software instruction only.

I ordered the book March 2, 2014, and it delivered today March 6, 2014. First I was very excited, but unfortunately This rented textbook is missing the assignment pages in chapter 2,3,4, 7 and some other pages. My class already started on Feb 28th and I have 2 assignments due already with a book that is missing those pages. What should I do? Just not happy with this situation.

I bought this book with the understanding that it had very little wear and tear on the cover and pages and no effect to the content. It came to me with lots of wear and tear and the book had a ton of writing in it. Plus, all of the Comprehensive Exams were torn out! Thankfully, I was able to get copies from another classmate's book for the exams. Very disappointed. :-(

Not a fan of this one.

I understand this is a tough subject to explain in a textbook, but the author doesn't really define many of the key terms or properly explain some of the concepts. Instead, the text relies on examples to do the teaching. For example, if the book contains section on what a database is, it never actually says "A database can be defined as....." or anything like that. It says something to the extent of "And what is a database? Well if we look at the example below we can see that the information on Acme Company represents a database." Very difficult to follow and required lots of looking up terms and cross referencing information with other sources.

About the Author

Great reference to the numerous technical indicators

This book was a great reference of the numerous technical indicators in use today. It gives brief examples of how use these various indicators. This book was not meant to give a comprehensive explanation of the "why's" of technical analysis. It already assumes that the reader already has an understanding of technical analysis. Readers who are just starting out in technical analysis should read books like "Technical Analysis Explained" by Martin Pring, or "Technical Analysis of the financial markets" by John Murphy. Both of these are textbook-style so give yourself at least a month to absorb all the material. Overall, Tech from AtoZ is a great reference tool.

Good overview of indicators, but only a few explanations

This book is really great if you are looking for a glossary or a dictionary of the various technical analysis indicators. However, if you are looking for a book to learn more about those indicators (underlying logic, mathematical explanations, optimization, indicators combinations ...) you may be disappointed.

The Quintessential Reference Book

Ever wonder what all those proper names and strange looking acronyms mean when you look at the choices of technical indicators available on most web sites today?
Steven B. Achelis, founder of EQUIS and creator of MetaStock has compiled the quintessential reference book for technical analysis covering practically every indicator known to mankind. But if there is one thing to imprint onto your brain from this book, it is contained in pages covering the subject "Support and Resistance." In all my years of floor trading, I have never seen anything more valid in price trend analysis than this horizontal (support) line connecting previous tops which once surmounted becomes the floor for the next move up. Achelis calls the pullback after breakout "trader's remorse" and it is the ideal place to buy into a strong stock in a strong industry. His several graphs depicting this pattern couldn't be more precise. The pictures are worth a thousand words. Armed with only this bit of technical knowledge, an investor would improve the odds of profitability many times over by merely subjecting every potential purchase to this test pattern. I take it that because Achelis spent about 5 times as much material on this one concept as he did the other indicators, he agrees that this is truly one of the most important theories in technical analysis.
The rest of the book is devoted to short descriptions of what various indicators mean, how they area calculated, and how they are used. This is especially useful when subscribing to any of the numerous web sites that now carry dozens of indicators. Keep the book close to the computer to have it as a ready reference. I doubt if you will find more detailed information in any other source.

About the Author
Jia-Ming Liu is Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. He received his PhD degree in applied physics from Harvard University in 1982. His research interests are in the areas of non-linear optics, ultrafast optics, photonic devices, optical wave propagation, nonlinear laser dynamics and chaotic communications. Dr Liu has written more than 150 scientific publications and holds 8 US patents. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America.

Comprehensive in many areas

I used this book for a semiconductor material and optical devices course (at the graduate level). I like the book because it has many examples throughout the chapter and several questions at the end of the chapter to test your understanding of the material. The chapters that I have familiarity with are chapter(s) 2, 12, 13, and 14.

The book is very rich in text and tries to use plots and graphs only out of absolute necessity. There are also many equations throughout each of the chapters and thus the problem arises that the same variable can be used to describe two or more different physical process. There is an extensive list in the front of the book explaining each variable, but some confusion can arise for the reader if not extremely careful.

All in all, I highly recommend the book for physicists and engineers alike who want a detailed description of the major topics in photonics all in one book. However, please note that photovoltaics is not covered in this text(S.O. Kasap's "Optoelectronics and Photonics: Principles and Practices" covers photovoltaic basics very well).

Excellent and Comprehensive, but very much need his lectures

(This review covers Chapters 1-6+9, which covers dielectric waveguides, gratings, couplers, electro-optics, nonlinear optics. Other chapters include magneto-optics, acousto-optics, semiconductor physics, lasers)

PROS
Good physical explanations of phenomena
- For example, goes through derivation of dielectric planar step-index waveguide. General results derived here apply to all dielectric waveguides.
Good from device perspective
- Covers all basic device principles and the devices themselves, from which larger and more complicated configurations can be made.
Gives what seems to be just the right level of math.
- When realistically designing photonic devices, Liu knows that one would use a computer for simulation, not crazy mathematical expressions (though this book does have some of those, but not to an overwhelming extent). Thus, he gives the math necessary if one were to write simulations (in the sense of, the simulation would solve the wave equation or the derived expression he gives).
- Section on nonlinear optics is EXCELLENT! Whereas other books are highly confusing on how to organize mathematics of nonlinear optics (which is very thick, considering the large number of elements in the tensors and the coupled equations), this one gives you a formula that always works: (1) Determine the frequencies involved. (2) Write the polarization of that frequency. (3) Use symmetries to reduce the number of independent elements (intrinsic, full and Kleinman). (4) Write the coupled equations. (5) Solve. Additionally, he spends a lot of time on phase matching, which is crucial for all processes where phase matching is not "automagically" (Liu himself used this word!) satisfied.

CONS
Needs his lecture.
- He is a professor of Electrical Engineering at UCLA, and his lecture emphasizes the big picture, while clarifying subtle facts. Without that, one might see the trees without seeing the forest.
