A Must-Read Book for Anyone Considering Making the Leap Back Home

Like some of the other reviewers, I was first turned off of this book based on a preconceived notion I had of the author from reading some of her more infamous blog postings. However, as the admin of a Facebook group for long term expats (many of which are in the ESL industry) looking to 'repatriate,' I decided to read the book and give as unbiased a review as possible.

So here's my verdict: This book should be the starting place for anyone thinking of going home after a stint abroad.

In the case of 'lifers,' that decide to return after a decade or more abroad, it often feels like you are alone. But you're not. Plenty of people have made the jump before you, so why does it feel like you're in completely uncharted waters? This book is the first that I've ever seen that is directly applicable to people in this demographic, and I think it is entirely appropriate that it revolves around a survey the author conducted of returnees.

The book is not perfect. Namely, it doesn't discuss the importance of 'future-proof' second career choices that will be anti-fragile in the face of technological developments like self-driving cars and the like (a critical consideration for those of us with families that depend on us), and I would have liked to have seen the raw results of the survey for myself. Still, it is the first and only book in this narrow, but much-needed niche.

Now I guess I need to go back and re-read the blog posts that had me so turned off initially. It's quite possible I mis-read or misinterpreted the author's intentions behind them. Regardless, this book will help a lot of people. Read it as early as possible in your career abroad.

ESL Teachers: Buy this book if you're ready to move out of teaching and want to retire by age 65!!

I'm an expat in South Korea, and Jackie's advice is indispensable. For many of us, our time abroad is not permanent, and we'll eventually have to move back home and set up our lives. This book is very practical and contains no fluff. It's a wake up call to any expat who wants to hit the ground running. This guide will help you maximize your savings so that you're not strapped for cash when you move back home, and it'll also help you think about the big picture in terms of your professional and personal goals.

By the way, I read this book about 6 months ago and decided "I can't be an English teacher in South Korea forever AND retire at 65." After reading this book, I evaluated my options, started studying computer science and web development like crazy, and have had several interviews for software engineering positions. I would not have made any changes if I hadn't read Jackie's advice in this book.

Well organized with great info

I've read a number of Jackie's books and have enjoyed them. While people may say that all that info is out there, the same could be said about just about anything. The thing is that Jackie organizes it all and makes it easy to read. I'm sure there are many of us TEFL teachers who are thinking, "what the heck am I going to do when I go home?". This book tells us what people have done: what works and what doesn't. She gives us options about what we can do. I have to admit that while I don't follow her website day to day, I like many of her articles, including the one she wrote about not wasting time, http://teachinginkoreanuniversity.com/korea-dont-waste-your-time/ .

I know that there are people who will end of TEFLing forever, but for the rest of us, her book offers good advice in a concise format.

The second edition of Fire Department Strategic Planning: Creating Future Excellence by Mark Wallace provides application and implementation details for the Fire Department Strategic Planning Model. This edition is designed to be consistent with the critical elements of the accreditation process and its associated Accreditation Self-Assessment Manual. With the advancement of strategic planning among fire service agencies since 1998, the publishing date of the first edition, the second edition focuses more on maximizing the impact and keeping the department's current strategic plan up to date. The "how-to approach" of the first edition remains for those first-time strategic planners.

About the Author
Mark Wallace is fire chief of the city of McKinney (TX) Fire Department. He came to McKinney from Golden, Colorado. In May, 2005, Chief Wallace completed 36 years in the fire service and has served in every functional position. He is a graduate of the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy. He was awarded his Chief Fire Officer Designation by the Commission on Chief Fire Officer Designation in 2003. He holds an associate's degree in fire science technology, a bachelor's degree in business administration, and a master's degree in public administration. He is the sole proprietor of Fire Eagle Limited, a consulting firm specializing in organizational effectiveness and the teaching of strategic planning.

Fire Service Strategic Planning

After a long search, I found this book to be the best reference on the market for the strategic planning process for volunteer fire services. It also covers career departments. We are presently in the beginning of the process. The book lays out a step-by-step process specifically for the fire service. Other books on strategic planning are business-orientated and include topics unrelated to the fire service. It provides definitions, explanations, recommended survey questions and everything else you may need. The author also has built flexibility in the process for each department because of different organizational structures, cultures, missions, etc. It is comprehensive and I recommend utilizing this book, even if you plan to hire a consultant to lead you through the process.

He is Executive Chairman of Lephatsi Investments (Pty) Ltd, Leswikeng Group of Companies and Phatsima Group of Companies and holds several other directorships. In 2004 Mashaba won the Free Market Foundation's Free Market Award for his exceptional contribution to the cause of economic freedom in South Africa.

The time bomb that is South Africa's unemployed youth.

I read Herman Mashaba's latest book "Capitalist Crusader" with deep dismay at the way South Africa has been sidetracked down a desperate road that has all but destroyed the economy. His research is impeccable, his conclusions persuasive and anyone with a care about the future for their families will find it, at the same time, offering a positive way forward. It's not a crusader's rant. It is a brave presentation of the facts and consequences of an utterly unsustainable socialist agenda that has led to South Africa now suffering one of the highest unemployment rates (+25%) in the world.. mainly among the young. Essential reading.

It is well known that Apartheid and neoliberal policies have created the problem of poverty. These problems will not be addressed by neoliberalism. They will be exacerbated by it.

My backyard pharmacy

I'm a book junkie. Yes, I admit it. But I have gotten more picky, which is why I hesitated for at least a week before ordering this book. And yes, I'm glad I gave in to the urge. I have read it through once and am destined to read it bit by bit many more times. There is enough science to satisfy the nurse in me, but also a strong connection to the more esoteric aspect of being an herbalist. My formal herbal study has been in the Celtic tradition so Julie Bruton-Seal's selection of plants is ideal for me. A large number of her favorite plants are growing near me. She has given me a different view of many different plant properties to consider. My back yard is my major pharmacy, and this lovely resource will broaden its scope and capability. The Celts had a strong thread of practicality that included using what was close at hand. I am following my roots and appreciate additional guidance in the journey.

Love this book!

I bought this book because I thought it would be a good addition to my library of herbal books. I have to say that I really like this book! It has a lot of information on each of the herbs that it covers. (I think there are 50 included in the book). It has nice, high quality pictures and the pages themselves are a nice heavy quality of paper - not flimsy pages that would tear easily. It gives you information on ways to harvest each of the herbs and how to prepare it. Each herb has several pages devoted to it and included in the side notes are descriptions, habitats, where it's found, related species, and it's key properties. Along with the pictures and the information, it is very thorough. I am really glad I bought this. It's a great reference book and very interesting too!

France Schott-Billmann, PhD, is a Psychoanalyst, Dance Therapist and Dance Researcher. She was Program Leader within the Performing Arts section of the Arts Therapy Program at University Paris 5 Descartes in Paris for 20 years until 2011, where she now teaches dance therapy to masters students. She worked with adolescent psychotic patients in the CEREP psychiatric hospital in Paris for 15 years. At present she works at Bellan Hospital in Paris with patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease. She teaches in various training programs in Europe and leads workshops all around the globe.

Lightroom is one of the most popular pieces of software available for people who want to process their digital images. It has an easy-to-use interface. If you learn to use Lightroom from a book like Scott Kelby's "The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter)" you can improve the quality of your images in a short time. But if you really want to squeeze the most out of the software then you need a book like "The Digital Negative".

The Digital Negative deals with just the image processing functions of Lightroom and Camera Raw, the plug-in that comes with Photoshop, which shares a processing engine with Lightroom, although the interface is different. Schewe also covers some of the uses of Photoshop for photograph processing that are beyond the capabilities of Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw.

After an introduction to Lightroom and Camera Raw processing, the author goes down the list of processing functions of the programs, covering the functions of each panel, usually in far more detail then one finds in an introductory book. (including the newest function, dehaze). Then he explains how he processes a variety of images, with his explanations of why he moved the sliders and buttons the way he did. Schewe then explains how he move images into Photoshop for the processing that can't be done in Lightroom and Camera Raw. The author finishes up with a discussion of his own workflows and even suggestions for speeding up the software functioning.
This is not a book for beginners. In fact, to get the most out of this book one ought to have some familiarity with the software discussed. The author's method is to present an image that requires processing and then to discuss what adjustments need to be made to enhance the image. Since he doesn't walk the reader through the image step by step, like Kelby, it is essential that one have familiarity with the panels and the results one can expect from moving a slider. But if one is familiar with the software, one can learn just how to use it to get more artful images. Schewe's language is as simple and understandable as one can expect for this more advanced topic.

The book doesn't provide downloadable images to use in tutorials, nor given the author's approach, is that necessary. Buried deep within the book (a sidebar on P.163), there is the address of a companion website where one can download a few of the images and examine the final images to see the settings Schewe actually used, but I didn't find this to be particularly helpful. Moreover it's just as well the author doesn't rely upon the reader being concerned with specific numerical settings because the screen shots of the panels required examination with a magnifying glass to see clearly.

I almost wish that Camera Raw had not been discussed, because of the dangers of confusing it with Lightroom, but Schewe does a good job of distinguishing them. He does show that there are some things that you can do with an image moved into Photoshop with Camera Raw that you can't do with Lightroom.

The Photoshop section deals with just a few tools to improve an image beyond Lightroom and Camera Raw. Some are pretty familiar, but the suggestions for selective sharpening may require several readings to comprehend.
Notwithstanding the blurb on the back cover, this is not a book for beginners. On the other hand, once you have a handle on Lightroom, Camera Raw, and for the fifth chapter, Photoshop, this book should help you to improve the quality of your images.

By the way, the great Ansel Adams wrote an influential book called "The Negative".

The Digital Negative - interesting & unusual

This book, The Digital Negative, is both interesting and unusual. It is interesting in that the author, Jeffe Schewe, creates a pseudo character, the Digital Image and then processes it in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. It is unusual in that this is the first time I have ever read about the developmental processes of Lightroom and Photoshop in the same book. I have read many books on Lightroom and many books on Photoshop. Yes, they may mention both programs in the same book but only in an incidental fashion. Here, the author describes in some detail the steps and progressions taken in each program to bring the main character, The Digital Negative, to its full realization as a well-developed photo.

Before getting into more detail, let’s look at the hard facts about the book. First, this is a second edition of this book updated to incorporate the latest developments in digital photography and its various programs. It is a soft cover book of 321 pages and measures 8 inches across by 9 inches tall. The suggested retail price is $49.99 however, at the time of this writing it was available on Amazon for $37.48. It also comes in a Kindle version. The Book Level rating is Beginning/Intermediate/Advanced. I have no problem with the latter two ratings but I would quibble with the Beginning rating. We will get into that shortly. The author, Jeff Schewe, is very well versed in digital photography and in both Lightroom and Photoshop having served as an early alpha tester for both.

As stated above, the Digital Image is the main character in this book. Schewe makes a strong case for creating all digital images using the raw format thus maximizing color capture. He describes in some technical detail all of the piece parts in a camera that are involved in capturing the digital image (one of the reasons for my quibble with the Beginning rating, too technical for a beginner). The balance of the book is devoted to processing the Digital Image, first in Lightroom and then in Photoshop. Lightroom is first treated fundamentally and then each of the developing processes in the program is examined more closely. Since many of the Lightroom processes also appear in Photoshop, that program skips the fundamental exposure and gets right into the developmental functions of Photoshop. During all of this, the author points out the similarities and differences between the programs. As I stated previously, this is the first time that I have read a book that does such an in-depth look at Lightroom and Photoshop in the same tome.

An interesting aspect of all of the Lightroom/Photoshop descriptions is the author’s asides about how these programs were initially developed and how they are very similar in some aspects and very different in others. These anecdotes stem from his early involvement in their development.

The book is well written. It is also well illustrated. It differs from other books on the subjects of Lightroom and Photoshop in that it does not provide a step-by-step detail such as you would find in Scott Kelby’s books. The prints of program screens are clear and readable. The final section of the book concerns creating an efficient workflow. The author presents some workflow principles and five work flow stages. He then weaves them into his personal workflow.

As stated previously, I have read a number of books on Lightroom and Photoshop. This is the first one that I have read that gave me so many comparisons between the two in the same book. I also very much enjoyed Schewe’s asides and info on the development of these programs. He has created a powerful argument for the use of the raw format in digital photography. It will cause me to do some experiments to decide if I want to employ it full time or not. It is that good a book that it has a hard-headed JPEG user like me wavering. If you are a dedicated digital photographer, this book is an investment well taken.

The best of its kind

The title says exactly what this book is about -- getting as much as possible from raw image files processed in Lightroom, Camera Raw, and Photoshop. And Schewe delivers. I've read any number of books about this software, particularly LR, but none of them has been as informative and immediately helpful as this one (I'll also say a word for its companion volume, "The Digital Print"). Applying what Schewe says in "The Digital Negative" immediately improved the quality of my post-processing and enabled me to do a better job of matching the final print to what my eyes saw in the field. I've been using Lightroom since version 1, and thought I knew the software pretty well, but Schewe taught me plenty that was new.

A major strength of the book is that Schewe gives you more than just recipes -- he explains how the tools work, why they do what they do, and this allows you to use the tools more effectively, to tweak an image in ways that pull out that last little detail that makes an image eye-catching. For example, the LR Develop/Basic sliders are adaptive, while the LR Develop/Tone Curve makes simple curve adjustments. Knowing this allows choosing the right tool to achieve the effect you want.

Schewe's book requires some work by the reader, but it's definitely worth it.
