Unhappenings, by Edward Aubry

When Nigel Walden is fourteen, the UNHAPPENINGS begin. His first girlfriend disappears the day after their first kiss with no indication she ever existed. This retroactive change is the first of many only he seems to notice.

Several years later, when Nigel is visited by two people from his future, he hopes they can explain why the past keeps rewriting itself around him. But the enigmatic young guide shares very little, and the haggard, incoherent, elderly version of himself is even less reliable. His search for answers takes him fifty-two years forward in time, where he finds himself stranded and alone.

And then he meets Helen.

Brilliant, hilarious and beautiful, she captivates him. But Nigel’s relationships always unhappen, and if they get close it could be fatal for her. Worse, according to the young guide, just by entering Helen’s life, Nigel has already set into motion events that will have catastrophic consequences. In his efforts to reverse this, and to find a way to remain with Helen, he discovers the disturbing truth about the unhappenings, and the role he and his future self have played all along.

Equal parts time-travel adventure and tragic love story, Unhappenings is a tale of gravely bad choices, and Nigel’s struggle not to become what he sees in the preview of his worst self.

About the Author
Edward Aubry is a graduate of Wesleyan University, with a degree in music composition. Improbably, this preceded a career as a teacher of high school mathematics and creative writing.

Over the last few years, he has gradually transitioned from being a teacher who writes novels on the side to a novelist who teaches to support his family. He is also a poet, his sole published work in that form being the sixteen stanza "The History of Mathematics."

He now lives in rural Pennsylvania with his wife and three spectacular daughters, where he fills his non-teaching hours spinning tales of time-travel, wise-cracking pixies, and an assortment of other impossible things.

An Amazing Science Fiction Book Full of So Much More
By Amazon Customer
I received an eARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for review consideration. The review that follows is still my honest opinion.

AHH!! This book was so good. Time travel as a concept confuses me SO much, so I was a little afraid going in that this book would be over my head or too confusing for me. However, author Edward Aubry skillfully bases his whole novel around a scientific, and maybe even fantasy to some, idea that works even if you don’t know or understand science at all because the book goes so much deeper than just science fiction. I love science fiction and fantasy novels and this book has that, but it has so much more with it’s romance and heart and insight into what people would do if they could know the future.

The unhappenings is a concept that I devoured because of Edward Aubry’s prose and ease with telling me what was happening. Things unhappen to main character Nigel all the time, since he was fourteen. The unhappenings is such a unique take to add to the time travel element that I just loved how it was incorporated into this story and how effortlessly it was explained and I could understand it all because Aubry’s words both told me and showed me what the unhappenings meant.

This story isn’t just a science fiction though, it’s a love story between Nigel and Helen. Nigel’s whole life, anytime he’s gotten close to any woman it has unhappened. However, he can’t resist his attraction to and pull to Helen. Could the unhappenings be stopped or paused, or could their love be immune? These questions will keep us guessing what will happen next while we fall in love with Nigel and Helen, all the while afraid that it may all come crashing down around them.

There is suspense and shocking moments throughout that kept me glued to the book. I had to know what happened next. I had to get answers to the mysteries surrounding time travel, the unhappenings, Nigel and Helen’s love. It all comes together so well and moved me with it’s heartfelt emotion about regret, guilt and what we would do if we could somehow see the future and prevent things from happening. I highly recommend this book and definitely see myself rereading this book in the future.

Brilliant and thoughtful time-travel novel
By CaroleHeidi
I have read a few time-travel novels and generally I find they are either really good, or terrible. There is no in between. Luckily, Unhappenings was one of the former and lived up to the stunning cover that caught my eye in the first place.

Not a story that throws you straight into the action, Unhappenings builds steadily, building a well rounded picture of Nigel and his life of peculiar ‘unhappening’ events of varying magnitude – from the mundane of his bike changing colour and nobody remembering it being any different, to his high-school girlfriends vanishing from history.

Gradually the weirdness intensifies and, after he befriends a mysterious time-traveller who keeps appearing in his life and a slightly unpleasant meeting with what appeared to be a slightly mad older version of himself, Nigel begins to try and work out what is going on and why it only seems to be happening to him.

The book is split into very short chapters. Very, very short chapters. This gives the illusion that you are reading super fast, when you are actually reading normally but, more importantly, it keeps everything well structured.

The trouble with time-travel is that you are hopping backwards and forwards with story threads leading all over the place and characters in different times, never mind places, and sometimes it all gets too much and you have no idea what is going on. Unhappenings‘ short chapters stop this from happening by containing each event in its own structured space, letting you know where you are and when each ‘event’ is finished. It still flows well and doesn’t feel bitty at all – a very clever decision by Edward Aubry that I really appreciated as a reader.

There were several twists in the plot that I totally hadn’t seen coming and kept me turning pages long after I should have gone to sleep. I can’t say too much without giving things away but the relationships between the characters across time were really well handled and the true backbone of the story was pure and simple love.

As ever, the path of true love does not run smooth, and some of Nigel’s choices in the book have utterly catastrophic consequences beyond anything most people cause in their pursuit of happiness. This makes for some pretty scary action, confusion and several heart-wrenching moments that had me on the edge of my seat.

A must for anyone who likes time-travel, science fiction and that type of fantasy – Unhappenings is a brilliant novel that starts sedately and soon builds to a fast-paced but thought-provoking conclusion. A great start to my 2015 reading adventure.

Don't hesitate buying this book, one of the best time-travel book's I've read
By GSMarlene
Wow. I said that several times reading this book and then several more times after I finished it. Not sure I could have said anything else without sounding like a babbling idiot.

I rarely give 5 stars to YA or adult books. Five stars is usually reserved for Maggie Stiefvater, an author who writes emotion like no other. But UnHappenings gets 5 stars from me and I'd go higher if Goodreads and Amazon would let me. In case you can't tell, I think this book was spectacular. It even gets high marks for grammar and formatting, another rarity from me.

Now, I'm a huge fan of sci-fi and time travel in particular. The first story I every wrote that made me think writing was a thing I could do was a time travel story. And better yet, when a book has complex world rules that I want to follow and tear apart and wonder if they're real, I know I'll want to read over and over.

I will say the rules are a bit complex and I don't think I've got the chops to keep enough in my head to follow it all, but for those who don't appreciate excessively technical books - don't worry. Just take the ride. Because deep down, this is a love story asking the question - if you had unlimited means, just how far would you go to keep the person you love.

There were times I wanted to pound Nigel for not asking the questions I knew he should, but he knew he wouldn't get an answer. Through 2/3 of the book, he was on as much of a ride as the reader. But when the answers start coming, oh, they're so painful and beautiful.

The style of this book has very short chapters, so it feels like a fast read. I appreciate the how the choppiness contributed to how Nigels life would have felt. There are many books I read and check out the page numbers to see my progress. In this case, I kept checking the page numbers, desperate that it wasn't close to ending. I would have followed this adventure for another couple hundred pages and I very much hope to see more from this author.

A side note to the Whovians out there - this book contains the real Impossible Girl!

Go buy this book now! You won't regret it. Best book I've read in a long time.
