Healing for the Church's wounded by divorce

"Biblical Misconceptions About Divorce and Remarriage: Shooting the Church's Wounded" is precise, is not wordy, and is informative. Also, like Emily Dickinson's poetry, it is short but has much to impart to the reader. This little book is destined to have a huge impact on the Christian community and those who have suffered at the hands of demagogues whose preaching shamed them in public just when they are in need of comfort.
The rupturing of the bonds of matrimony has a long history. It is not a modern or post modern phenomenon but is rather part and parcel of the human condition. It is not what God wants but God is a realist. "...God's Justice in Holy Scripture is more often expressed in His response on behalf of the oppressed than it is a revelation of His judgement against sin."(Winters, Biblical Misconceptions)
Moses insists that Jewish men not "put away" i.e. lock out of the house, their wives but that they give them a writ of divorcement announcing to the world that they are no longer husband and wife and that the wife is free to marry. Biblical translators of the Jewish and Christian testaments have consistently obfuscated two different words in both Hebrew and Greek that to "put out" equals "divorce."
This is not uncommon as translations are seldom done without prejudice. The translator is hampered by his/her personal background. It is something we can't escape. The Italians have a phrase for it: Traduttore, traditore. Has a nice ring to it but as anyone who has attempted to translate knows it is true, the translator is a traitor. Chuck Winters makes a good case that there has been gross mistranslation and misunderstanding of the Biblical concepts of "putting away" and divorce.
As a Catholic I wish that Catholic moral theologians and Biblical scholars would read this treatise and consider it with as open a mind as Rev. Winters has approached the Bible. We often take for granted that we know what the Bible says and that's good enough for me- but au contraire, if we are not shocked into new understanding and new life then it is just words, meaningless words.
Read this book. If you are a divorced and remarried Christian read this book and be healed.

Spoke to my heart on a personal level having been beat about the Christian community for leaving an abusive adulterer.
In a place where I should have been the safest, I was not.
In many ways church now is a part of "old boys club" or "doesn't look good for the numbers of issues/divorces" but yet having no insight into what to do, they keep wanting to do the same thing that hasn't worked and in many ways puts or can put the woman and the children very much into a far more dangerous situation. So when in doubt castigate the innocent parties to shut them down and beat them from the pulpit with scripture that doesn't even fit the situation.
I know that I know that my Lord never intended women and children the punching bags for anyone and there is no glory to stay with it.

Powerful reading

This is a back to basics book of what the Bible says without all the prejudices that usually sterotypes most divorces. The book gives insight to help the healing of individuals as well as in the church for divorced people to go on without the stigima that so often comes from church members. The church needs to embrace the hurting, not throw more rocks at them. Recommend reading this book as a guide to help the hurting.
