Learn how to think like an economist.

The Economic Way of Thinking goes beyond explaining the basic principles of micro- and macroeconomic analysis by showing readers a method of reasoning that teaches them how to apply these principles as tools. The authors expose readers to a method of reasoning that makes them think like an economist through example and application and also shows them how not to think, by exposing errors in popular economic reasoning.

One of the best Economic textbooks I've read
By J A W
Heyne begins w/ the first principles of economics: how human beings interact on a mass scale, and the positive consequences of those actions, and the negative consequences of interferring w/ voluntary human interaction. He then carries the reader through the traditional economic concepts of Supply and Demand, Specialized Labor, Externalities...all focused through the lens of the "Economic Way of Thinking".
Make no mistake--this book is a substantive, philosophical refutation of "Statism". Heyne hits Comparative Advantage, Price Theory, Rule of Law, and Private Property hard (in the affirmative), and if you're for tariffs, regulated prices, arbitrary Gov't intervention, and public property, your views won't be validated. All the more reason for you to read this book, and understand why so many stamp their foot down against politicized economic policies that superficially sound and feel so good. Heyne's lesson is to think on a macro-scale, think about the unintended consequences of mass social change, for that is the Economic Way of Thinking.

Very different way of teaching economics - I like it
By Nhon Quach
I recently took a course that used this as the main textbook. When I read the book the first time before the course started, I didn't like it at all and was thinking of dropping the course. But after the course started and the professor went over the material in greater detail, I began to understand and appreciate why the authors chose to write the book this way, instead of in the way most conventional textbooks are written -- define and explain new terms or concepts, etc.

Like other conventional economic textbooks, the Economic Way of Thinking teaches major concepts in micro and macro economics (such as supply and demand, inflation, GDP, etc.) but teaches them in a much more engaging way -- not just a collection of facts, definition of terms or concepts, etc. The authors pointed out the importance and subtlety in each new term or concept. That gave me additional insight into the material in the book. I also found the exercises at the end of the chapters very useful.

The best book about economics ever written
By A Reader
Warren Buffet once said of Benjamin Graham's Intelligent Investor: "I read the first edition of this book early in 1950, when I was nineteen. I thought then that it was by far the best book about investing ever written. I still think it is."

Allow me to paraphrase, loosely though with verity in the details. I read the eleventh edition of this book early in 2003, when I was nineteen. I thought then that it was by far the best book about economics ever written. I still think it is.

This book lit a fire in me that led me to my college major, my career, and one of my life's great passions, the study of economics. Heyne guides us with the simple but powerful idea of economics, that scarcity is the ultimate factor in all our choices. What motivates people to organize and to specialize? And, given the scarcity constraint, in what manner would we expect that they organize and specialize? The thesis recurs and builds on itself in a most elegant manner throughout the text.

I cannot say how powerful this text is. I have taken graduate courses in economics but none come close to explaining the world like this book. I have read it several times over, and all to whom I recommend this book have been equally impressed by its power and beauty.

As I mentioned this is one of the few books that has forever guided the way I think about the world. READ THIS BOOK!

The Uninvited, by Liz Jensen

A seven-year-old girl puts a nail gun to her grandmother's neck and fires. An isolated incident, say the experts. The experts are wrong. Across the world, children are killing their families. Is violence contagious? As chilling murders by children grip the country, anthropologist Hesketh Lock has his own mystery to solve: a bizarre scandal in the Taiwan timber industry.

Hesketh has never been good at relationships: Asperger's Syndrome has seen to that. But he does have a talent for spotting behavioral patterns and an outsider's fascination with group dynamics. Nothing obvious connects Hesketh's Asian case with the atrocities back home. Or with the increasingly odd behavior of his beloved stepson, Freddy. But when Hesketh's Taiwan contact dies shockingly and more acts of sabotage and child violence sweep the globe, he is forced to acknowledge possibilities that defy the rational principles on which he has staked his life, his career, and, most devastatingly of all, his role as a father.

Part psychological thriller, part dystopian nightmare, The Uninvited is a powerful and viscerally unsettling portrait of apocalypse in embryo.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. An epidemic outbreak of corporate sabotage and murderous children fuels this cerebral thriller from English writer Jensen (The Rapture). Hired to find an explanation for the chaos is Phipps & Wexman, the multinational legal firm that employs Hesketh Lock as a cross-culture specialist. In an unusual twist, Hesketh is an anthropologist whose Asperger syndrome allows him to study human behavior at a remove (and ends most of his romantic relationships almost before they begin). The saboteurs, it turns out, are all employees trying to bring down their own corporations: in Taiwan, one blows the whistle on an illegal-logging coverup; another, in Sweden, fouls a deal in coffee futures, costing his bank millions; and in Dubai, an employee of a multinational construction company alters figures and screws up his company's business across five continents. Each saboteur commits suicide under baffling circumstances, but it's not until Dubai, where Hesketh witnesses a man's surprisingly elegant suicide when a small, ragged child appears, that he begins to see connections. Hesketh gradually discovers that the children constitute a tribe of sorts, with a group consciousness and their own language. They also have a mysterious craving for salt, as do the saboteurs. All of this has global ramifications, ratcheting up the suspense as the narrative picks up speed. Complementing the larger investigation is Hesketh's relationship to his beloved stepson, who has attempted to kill his mother. Are the children genetic mutants ? Have they come from the future to wreak havoc? Jensen never says, and her denouement is eerie and foreboding, leaving unanswered as many questions as it addresses. Agent: Clare Alexander, Aitken Alexander Associates. (Jan.)

From Booklist
The author of The Rapture (2009) offers up another gripping apocalyptic thriller, this one told from the point of view of a British man with Asperger’s syndrome who works for a consulting firm. Hesketh Lock isn’t sure what to make of an unsettling pattern that’s emerging around the world: formerly loyal employees are taking their own lives after committing acts of corporate sabotage. As the cases pile up, Hesketh tries to find a link between them while also making note of an even more terrifying trend: children are turning on their families, often resulting in fatal attacks. This hits home for Hesketh, who is very attached to Freddy, the seven-year-old son of his ex-girlfriend Kaitlin. When Freddy starts to display behaviors similar to those of the children whose violent assaults are stirring up paranoia and hysteria around the world, Hesketh fears he might lose the boy for good. Jensen weaves an eerie, haunting narrative, told in Hesketh’s singular voice, building an unsettling tension as it moves toward a chilling finish. --Kristine Huntley

No Seconds? All Myself? Why, This Would Make a Man a Man of Salt, to Use His Eyes for Garden Water-Pots.
By Robert Beveridge
Liz Jensen, The Uninvited (Bloomsbury, 2013)

Full disclosure: this book was provided to me free of charge by Amazon Vine.

I had a very difficult time with the first few chapters of this book. Hesketh Lock's head is a very difficult place to be, especially if you think like him. Something to be wary of, though once you've got the rhythm of Hesketh's narration down, that becomes less of a problem in Jensen's absorbing, intricately-plotted, baffling mystery-sci-fi-horror tale...

at least, in the first three-quarters or so of it. Liz Jensen hands us Lock, our narrator, an insurance investigator-cum-spin doctor with Asperger Syndrome; a man for whom logic is everything and clarity is supreme. At least, he wants to think so; as the book opens, on the other hand, we find Hesketh on the island of Arran, off the coast of Scotland, working on a very complex piece of origami while trying to sort out his feelings about the recent breakup of a three-year relationship and his continuing affection for the ex's son Freddy, a child from a previous relationship with whom Hesketh has a strong bond. All of this is setup, really, and the slow pace of that doesn't help much; things get better when we meet Ashok, Hesketh's manic boss, who sends Hesketh winging off to investigate a bit of what seems to be industrial sabotage in southeast Asia. The case is quickly resolved, and Hesketh actually comes to respect the saboteur. But soon after, Hesketh learns in quick succession that (a) the man committed suicide, (b) this may not have been an isolated incident (he is immediately sent to Sweden on another case, which has disturbing similarities), and (c) these cases may be related to a series of violent attacks by children on their family members that is also plaguing the planet. Hesketh, Ashok, and other investigators at their company race to find the answers before society spirals completely out of control, even bringing Hesketh's mentor, Professor Whybray, out of retirement to assist--but all of them have their own personal baggage to deal with, and some of that starts getting in the way...

I spent the first half of this book amazed at what Liz Jensen was creating. I had no idea where she was going with it all, and was fascinated with the possibilities. Then she dropped the first hint, and I found myself thinking, "please, don't turn this into a crappy predictable piece of [x] fiction." It's to Jensen's credit that she kept me thinking that until pretty darn close to the final chapter of the book; it felt like she was headed that way, but she never really stepped foot over the line until she absolutely had to. Which does not change the fact that the book picks the easiest, most predictable, most tiring way of resolving all of those previously-interesting bits and tying them all together. Again to Jensen's credit, she doesn't tie everything up neatly, as well she shouldn't; I can't go into detail without being spoilery, but the simple fact is that, from Hesketh's perspective, there is no way for him to have gained all of the answers by book's end, and that's something too many authors would have failed to realize. In fact, and since I keep using the phrase "to Jensen's credit" this should be obvious, the book is impeccably-written, most of it is very well-plotted, the main characters are solid, and even when some of the others aren't, it's very tempting to paint this as the way Hesketh sees them rather than any defect in Jensen creating them (Kaitlin, his ex, for example; Hesketh describes in a place or two how he's basically written her off, and so seeing her as two-dimensional makes sense). All well and good...but I can't get past that overly-facile, annoying resolution. It goes along so well, and then falls off a cliff. And yet, I can't bring myself to ding the book for that as hard as I desperately want to because it teetered on that edge for so long without actually falling off. There is a lot to be said for this book. Prepare, however, for great disappointment. **

Intriguing Plot, Epic Moments, Might Not Suit Everyone
By Pepper
I have to say I'm not surprised by the mixed response to this book displayed in the other reviews. This book is brilliant in my opinion, but I can see how it might not be to everyone's fancy.

Hesketh has Asperger's Syndrome, and putting us in his head for the duration of the story certainly makes for a unique read. Hesketh has a detached view to events, but at the same time you can see an inner struggle happening. If you're looking for a heart-thumping action thriller, this isn't the book for you. The story is very much about Hesketh and his inner journey, something facilitated by the world literally doing itself over. Of course, the horror aspects of this book definitely keep the heart rate up, but the way the narrative flows is a bit different to books that might have a "socially normal" point of view character.

The best advice I can give is to read the sample. If you loved the sample, you'll love the rest of the book.

As a side note, there were moments in this book that I can only describe as epic. Not Lord-of-the-Rings-Star-Wars-Dune epic, but more like holy-snapping-duck-sh**-that-one-sentence-just-freaking-blew-my-brain.

The only reason for not rating five stars is that I felt the ending could have been stronger. Compared to the rest of the book, I feel the author breezed over it a little.

Demonstrates the deep humanity often hidden within Asperger's
By B. Case
Hesketh, the main character in Liz Jensen's newest novel, "The Uninvited," is someone I don't think I shall ever forget. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to get to know him through this book, and I can't shake the feeling that he's not just a literary character, but someone very real.

Hesketh has Asperger's. He has a Ph.D. in anthropology, an affinity for learning and speaking foreign languages, a life-long love for linguistics, and a passion for origami. Everyday life frequently over-stimulates him and he resolves these situations by folding origami figures compulsively in his mind. For pleasure, he reads about the latest advances in particle physics. Hesketh is the ultimate reliable narrator; it is impossible for him to tell a lie. His ex-wife calls him a meat robot, but readers will learn that he has a deep reservoir of humanity that makes him a better human being than most of the best without Asperger's. He has some odd social behavior that is not uncommon to those on the autism spectrum...behavior that at times can be extremely humorous. Hesketh is a gem of a human just waiting for the reader to discover.

If a fine author with very strong writing skills manages to deliver an extraordinary character study, then that would generally be enough to satisfy most literary readers. But what makes this book extraordinary is that this brilliant character study is enveloped in first-rate dystopian sci-fi thriller. I love dystopian fiction, but rarely get a chance to read it because it is hard for me to find authors that will hold my interest. This book grabbed me at the beginning, and didn't let go until I'd quickly made my way to the end. For me, it was a high-octane literary and thinking-person's thriller.

The main character is employed as a Behavioral Patterns Expert for an international corporation with a sudden growing worldwide client-base seeking help resolving devastating and singularly unexplainable cases of insider sabotage. Hesketh is the analyst sent to figure out what is going on...to examine the chaos of seemingly unrelated facts surrounding each case and somehow find the underlying patterns that connect the dots, in short, to find out why. Simultaneously, worldwide media attention is focused on a slow but growing phenomenon of preadolescent children violently attacking and killing their parents and other adult family members. Hesketh eventually sees a link between the two types of incidents: corporate sabotage and child murderers. It is a problem so big it threatens the collapse of the whole of global civilization. It is a force that can't be stopped. Hesketh's job eventually morphs into a singular focus: nurturing and saving his ex-stepchild, Freddy K. Through Hesketh's love and care for Freddy K., we begin to understand the depths of humanity that often remain hidden behind the outward social awkwardness of Asperger's.

"The Uninvited" is a gem of a novel. Reading it makes me want to turn around and read all the author's previous works...and I will.

Art as Politics: The Future of Art and Community, by Adam Krause

The arts originated in the day-to-day activities of human communities. But through the confluence of the culture industry and status driven high art, the products of artistic activities have become mere commodities and specimens of culture rather than integral elements in the fabric of our everyday life. Art has become disconnected from life. What are the ways in which we can reverse this process? How can we make the arts a powerful force in healthy and vibrant communities? Taking his cues from artists, thinkers, and movements as disparate as John Cage, Joseph Beuys, John Dewey, Social Ecology, and DIY punk rock, Adam Krause offers a bold prescription for the future of art and community.

Art as Politics is a book that should be read by anyone who has an interest and concern for the future of any form of the arts. The book gives a brief but sufficient history of the numerous versions of art history available and lays out a plan for the future of art. The book does an excellent job of proving why art today is not what art was meant to be and shows how society can allow art to be a meaningful part of everyone's life. The author illuminates the downfalls of a society that is driven by corporations and the need to be the most successful monetarily and paints a vivid picture of what a life with art that is created for the sake of the art itself and what the creator's vision really is could be.

You Are Worth It: Feel Comfortable Communicating your Fees & Achieve the Income your Services Deserve, by Ashley Latter

Do you sometimes reduce the price of your treatments in your head because you feel your patients cannot afford them? Does talking of money in your surgery make you feel uncomfortable? Are you worried about quoting a price due to the fear you might get a negative response from your patient? Do you feel your services are worth more than you get paid for them? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then I promise you will enjoy reading this book. This book reveals information on exactly how to deal with this problem. As far as I am aware, the contents are not taught at any dentistry school. While certain elements of pricing may have been touched on by dental coaches, they'll have barely scratched the surface of what I do in this book. I'll be looking at this complex issue in depth, delving into the psychology of what you do in those awkward situations and even why you do it! I will alter your thought process, your beliefs, and most significantly, your behavioural pattern. You will never improve your results until you change your entire approach. This book will enable you to smash through all the restrictions that you've placed upon yourself when it comes to the fees that you charge your patients. I guarantee that once you've broken your own barriers down, the methods described in this book will provide you with the confidence necessary to deal with every pricing issue which arises. After all, you are worth it.

Just What I Needed
By M. S. Standridge
I just read this book from start to finish in 48 hours. And I have to say, it came at a very important time for me. I'm in the second year of my own start-up practice. After 3 years in the public health sector, I had been used to "cheap" dentistry and patchwork. Not true quality and comprehensive care that had drawn me to the practice of dentistry in the first place. But the transition from public to private hasn't been without some setbacks, most primarily the ones in my comfort with quoting fees and presenting treatment plans. This book brought me a lot of "a-ha" moments. Granted, it's a relatively short book, so it can't hold your hand all the way, but it was a great launching point for me and my personal/professional development. As much as I have invested into my technical skills, I realize now that I need to turn my attention to my "soft" skills. Thank you Ashley, I hope to learn more from you in the future.

P.S. The realizations that I had reading this book helped me to successfully present a case of life changing dentistry that both the patient and I are ecstatic for. Thank you again.

Great Book to Teach Communication Skills
By T. Draper
This book covers the topics of believing in your fees and how to communicate the value that you provide to your patients.

It helped put in perspective the work that goes into earning a dental degree and how I should be confident in speaking with patients.

One of the best books on the business side of dentistry that I've read.

The Global Food System: A brief guide to the conflicting logics of food (Paradigm Shakers Book 1), by Zaid Hassan

“The story of the modern global food system is the story of unintended consequences. It’s the story of a causal logic run amok. It’s the familiar story of how we’re all intimately connected without quite grasping just how intimately. It’s the deeply disturbing story of a system characterized by historic injustice that continues to produce injustice today. It’s a story that goes to the throbbing, bleeding heart of sustainability. Finally, it’s the worldchanging story of what we do when faced with the reality of such a narrative. It can, without being hyperbolic, be called the mother of all systemic problems.”

The struggle for food stretches back as far as we can remember. The modern food system is unlike anything we have ever seen before. While the promise that we can feed everyone on earth seems tantalizingly close, our food systems are getting more and more complex. How are we to understand this complexity? How has the global food system evolved over the years? How are we to understand this vast, globalized and interconnected system?

The Global Food System provides a short, sharp and accessible introduction to anyone interested in food and the challenge of how we produce food.

This is a thoughtful and insightful look at real head ...
By Michael J Kang
This is a thoughtful and insightful look at real head scratcher of an issue, the global food system. This collection of essays goes into the dysfunctions that are currently baked into that system and the conflicting worldviews of the people that shape it. It illuminates the need for totally new approaches to reconciling those worldviews into ways of actually acting on these issues rather than sitting by and watching things collapse. Take a look!

"A horribly cruel and insidious virus"
By JLind555
Randy Shilts masterpiece, "And The Band Played On", reads like a detective story; from the discovery of an unusual new organism that was killing a few people slowly and inexorably in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and multiplied exponentially underground until it exploded into the number one health catastrophe on the planet.

The fact that AIDS at first took its heaviest toll among gay men, and then among intravenous drug users, guaranteed that its early victims would become outcasts. The AIDS panic seems unbelievable in retrospect but was all too real in the 80s; people were forced off their jobs, children were barred from schools, and anyone who belonged to the "4-H club" (homosexuals, hard-drug users, hemophiliacs, and -- incredibly -- Haitians) were treated like pariahs. The secrecy and denial in dealing with the crisis helped it to spread unabated.

Shilts pulls no punches in writing this book. He is equally angry at the Reagan administration which preached pious platitudes while withholding desperately needed funds for medical research; the radical gay community which refused to acknowledge its own responsibility for the sexually promiscuous behavior that helped spread the disease like wildfire, and those in the medical community who played grandstanding politics and plain old-fashioned spite while patients were dying all around them. And then of course there was the media, which treated this puzzling, terrifying new disease -- which for two years after its discovery didn't even have a name -- as something the "general public" didn't have to be concerned about, until heterosexual men and women began to be infected.

But there were also the heroes -- the physicians who devoted their days and nights to treating their patients, gay men like Larry Kramer who refused to let the gay community sweep the problem under the rug, Rock Hudson, whose up-front candor and admission of his illness shocked the American public and helped to bring AIDS out of the closet once and for all, and C. Everett Koop, Reagan's Surgeon General, who refused to play politics and demonstrated the leadership his boss lacked in his common-sense and compassionate approach to meeting the crisis, to the horror of his right-wing constituency.

Shilts wrote his story with such compelling urgency that it wraps the reader up like a whodunit you don't want to put down. One shares his disgust at the doctors who cared more about their own self-promotion than about their patients; the right-wing politicians who treated the victims of a devastating and deadly disease as if they were sinners who had earned the wrath of God; the gay men who didn't care how many people they infected as long as they could enjoy the promiscuous atmosphere of the bath houses, and most incredibly, the for-profit blood banks, which refused to admit their product was carrying a deadly virus and fought against blood testing for three years while the number of people who died from transfusions of infected blood grew by the thousands. And in a heartbreaking coda to this story, Shilts deliberately put off having his own blood tested while he was writing this book because he didn't want his judgement biased if he turned out to be HIV positive. It was only after he finished the book that he learned that he was infected with the virus that had killed so many and in a few years would also kill him.

Shilts' death from AIDS was a tragedy, but he left us this magnificent book as his legacy. After reading his book, we are the richer and the wiser for his information, his insight and his understanding.

This Book Encouraged me to Ride My Bike 350 Miles
By A Customer
I read this book several years ago, and the effect of that reading is still making an impact on my life.
Randy Shilts blends science, sexuality, politics and humanity into a gripping and emotion-provoking story detailing the rise of the AIDS Epidemic. By drawing the readers into the lives of individuals and communities at the core of the epidemic, Shilts gives them the opportunity to see how the epidemic developed and spread, and the ways in which it was allowed to spread further, thru apathy, inaction, ignorance (both deliberate and not), fear, and even egotism.
When I listen to the news in today's world, and I hear accounts of the post-9/11 Anthrax scares, or the recent pneumonia illness that has now affected some 1,500 people -- my heart aches. Not to discount the reality of these illnesses, but all I can remember is how angered and saddened I felt as I read "And the Band Played On" and realized that hundreds of thousands of people were infected before the word AIDS was ever mentioned in the media. I was a sophmore in college when I first remember hearing about AIDS. That was in 1987. How many people had died from the disease before I even knew what it was????
I feel everyone should read this book. It doesn't just apply to people in high-risk populations. I happen to be a young heterosexual female, and this book made such an impression on me, that last summer, I found myself joining a 350-mile bike marathon to raise money and awareness for people living with HIV and AIDS. When people asked me why I was doing the ride, I told them about "And the Band Played On."
Randy Shilts' book is haunting and most of all, REAL. The only bad thing is that the book ends -- AIDS doesn't.

An outstanding work of journalism
By Trixie
I'm sure most people are familiar with the story but just as very brief background Randy Shilts was a reporter at the epicenter of the AIDS crisis when it first began. When his paper assigned him to cover the story on a regular basis (the only paper in the country to do so), he gained access to an vast wealth of material and a unique perspective-one that for many years went largely unreported by most of the media until the death of Rock Hudson changed everything. Shilts discovered he himself was HIV positive after he finished the book; he had asked his doctor not to reveal the test results to him until then. He passed way in 1994. His work to alert his own community on the coming health crisis often made him a pariah within it.
This is an amazing history of how the virus took off in America and an insight into why it remained so under-reported for so long. The story involves some very brave patients, some very irresponsible ones, incredibly dedicated medical professionals, major bungling by our government and the blood industry-some of it intentional and some paths paved with good intentions, and the mixed, frustrating reaction of the gay community itself. Shilts doesn't write completely without bias-he calls the decision of the CDC to release patient names to an NYC bloodbank "incredibly stupid" but who wouldn't agree with him on that point? Also, Shilt's fury at certain members of the Reagan administration and Reagan himself is palpable. Once again though, who wouldn't agree with him once the story has been unfolded. His anger is not limited just to the government nor is this just an anti-Republican screed-he praises Orrin Hatch and Everett Koop while bitterly recalling the inaction of Ed Koch's administration in New York. Gay leaders also are not always portrayed in a flattering light. For all of that though, Shilts struggles to be fair and largely is successful.
This book may look daunting, both because of it's subject matter and it's length (clocking in around 600 pages.) However it is incredibly worth your time and written so well that you'll make surprisingly short work of it. Even if you aren't interested in AIDS per se, the story of how our government responded to this crisis (or, rather, largely failed to) should and will frighten you. An incredible call to action and snapshot of a moment in time and place that might otherwise have been forgotten. And that would be a tragedy.
