Easy to read, but contains inaccurate information

I picked up this book because it looked like a light, easy read, and I thought it would offer a good introduction to cleaning up my diet and getting free of wheat, gluten, and sugar. The light and easy part met my expectations, and I finished the book in a couple of sittings. The author was a little too fond of catch phrases and buzzwords for my liking, and it felt like I was reading one long magazine article, but I shouldn't complain, as I bought the book in part for the easy reading after all.

A positive of the book is that it offers up some tasty recipes and new ideas for meals strategies. There are also some useful tables with columns for "bad, better, and best" eating options, which are a convenient reference tool. The author also gives us a `14 day-kick start diet,' which I haven't followed and don't intend to. It's too restrictive in calories for me, and could cause me to rebel and relapse into a binge at some point. But for those with an iron will, the meals look tasty. And sure enough, he does cover the whys and hows of giving up wheat, gluten, and sugar in a broad if not deep manner. He also offers additional information on why stress makes us fat, and includes an easy exercise plan at the end of the book.

The reason I only gave the book 3 stars was because of the veracity of some the content, beginning with the author's opinions on microwaving. He makes the statement that "microwaves kill the goodness in food." This comment brought my reading to a halt. The author offers no evidence to substantiate this claim, nor did he point me in the direction of any scientific studies that have proven this. Indeed, there are no citations for this or any other of the emphatic statements he makes throughout the book. The truth is that numerous studies have found that for most foods, microwaving actually helps retain nutrients, at least when compared to boiling foods and other forms of over cooking. (Please - if anyone can point me towards any legit studies stating otherwise - let me know!) On top of that he nay-says frozen foods, which again, if they've been frozen correctly, can contain more nutrients than some `fresh' foods that have been sitting on the store shelf for too long.

However, the major stick in my craw was when, after extolling the virtues of giving up gluten, the author goes ahead and lists rye and spelt as fine foods to indulge in. However, both foods are packed with gluten. Hopefully no one who's allergic to gluten goes by his recommendations.

In conclusion I found this the Clean and Lean Diet book a pleasant enough and easy read. It contained some useful information and some nice, simple recipes, which I've already begun to use. And I got what I wanted from it, which was to begin along the path of eating a more clean diet, without the arduous slog of a more intensive book. Unfortunately however, the inaccuracies left me wandering about which of the information I could really trust - so an arduous slog with a more factual book is now on my horizon after all.

Bottom line: If you want an easy, fluffy afternoon read to get you on track in cleaning up your diet, this is the book for you. If you'd prefer a book packed with verifiable facts and depth you'd better try elsewhere.

Clean & Lean really works!!

I bought the Clean & Lean Diet book as a recommendation by a friend, but let's face it, who doesn't want to look like Elle McPherson (well maybe not if you're a boy or maybe you want to attract someone that looks like Elle). So off I go, book in hand, reading like a woman possessed because I am so excited to start my diet and lo & behold, 14 days in I can tell you that so many people have noticed a huge difference in my appearance its just amazing. I feel so much better for it as well. The first 14 days is the kick start program and you really do need to follow it to the letter. Once you have completed the detox part, you can then have one day a week where you have something a little naughty, as by then your body can deal with the toxins in more efficient ways. James likes to use everything organic, so just try to do the best you can as it helps with the detox process. Don't forget, this is a way of life, so unless you can commit to no gluten and no sugar, you should probably pass. I find the diet relatively easy, I just opt for clean foods as much as I can when eating out, salads, fish etc. The best thing about the diet is that you can still have oils (good ones) and things like avocado. There are many recipes included for inspiration. You have heaps more energy and because you feel so good, it makes you want to do more exercise. A win win as far as I am concerned, so it just adds to the benefits of a lifestyle change. Now that I am aware of what goes into many store concocted bakery goods and other products, it really makes me feel a little sick when I look at them. Not quite Elle but maybe something a little closer, that's all you can hope for!

The best present to your health and body (but not completely revised and updated content compared to the previous edition)

I have been a fan of this system for years and I have purchased also the previous edition of this book (I also have the Flat Tummy Fast and the amazing Clean and Lean Recipes Book). Whilst the title makes reference to diet this is a lifestyle and not a counting calories exercise The system is based on the principle of cutting carbs, refined sugar, alcohol, processed food. The great thing about this system is that the author explains in detail the reason why these should be avoided and the (bad) effects their consumption has on your health.
There is a 14 days plan (different compared to the previous edition) to kick off with the system to get rid of toxins and new recipes. The section on exercises is the same as the previous edition, but with a different mix. If you are a fan of the Clean & Lean system this book is worth buying only if you want to try new recipes as I did not notice a great deal of difference compared to the previous edition. If you have never tried this system purchase this book (in this 2013 edition) and you will notice the difference just a few changes can make in your life and weight. This is not a fad like Tracy Anderson - actually exercising for 60 minuets everyday is bad for you!
I really like the style of the author, never patronising or arrogant. He is very supportive in his tone. And if this system works for Elle MacPherson and Hugh Grant also common mortals like us can get huge benefits with regards to our health!

* There are mistakes in the pages numbers relating to the exercises circuits. Also he mentions the 8 minutes workout that was present in the previous edition, but is not in this one (even if he mentions it). Looks a little bit rushed in this section. Also the statement of this being a totally revised and updated version is not correct as more than 80% of the content is the same as the previous edition (there is just a different mix of the exercises, a couple of new testimonials, a rejigged foreword by Elle MacPherson and new recipes - basically what I found useful and truly new are the recipes).

Best Southern African Bird Guide!

The Southern African Subregion may have the most field guides of any region, but the SASOL guide is undesputedly the best field guide to the region and probably the best bird book in Africa!
The book illustrates every single of the 900 species in full color. The plates are beautifully illustrated and the species are often shown in flight and females and juveniles are very often illustrated. The only very slight downside is that the plates are a little small, but there is a new, larger version that has been newly published in South Africa by Struik Publishers (Cape Town).
In South Africa's Birds & Birding magazine it was voted as the best field guide of the region by many ornithologists

Filial piety stories used to be the first things kids learn at school. But in modern China, a country that has been said to gradually lose all its virtues, filial piety has not been a word you hear very often now. Wikipedia has a very good summary of what being filial means: “In more general terms, filial piety means to be good to one's parents; to take care of one's parents; to engage in good conduct not just towards parents but also outside the home so as to bring a good name to one's parents and ancestors; to perform the duties of one's job well so as to obtain the material means to support parents as well as carry out sacrifices to the ancestors; not be rebellious; show love, respect and support; display courtesy; ensure male heirs, uphold fraternity among brothers; wisely advise one's parents, including dissuading them from moral unrighteousness; display sorrow for their sickness and death; and carry out sacrifices after their death.”

The Return Of The Modern Day Praetorian Guard

I am a staunch conservative, a veteran of the U.S. Military, and have worked in private sector for the past 32 years in the Risk Management department for a large U.S. based retailer. I work closely with law enforcement across multiple jurisdictions mostly in the area of Organized Retail Crime and have an inbred respect for all law enforcement. I purchased this book with some reservations as I figured that it would be nothing more than a left wing progressive cop bashing fest. I could not have been more wrong about this author's body of work or intentions.

The book is well researched, full of facts, and I found it surprisingly to be politically neutral! The author in fact goes out of his way to not blame law enforcement for the current trend in the militarization of their officers, or the proliferation of SWAT teams materializing all over the country. In fact he lays most of the blame for this right at the feet of our legislators. No one party is or branch of government is exempt. Numerous presidents, senators, members of the house, and Supreme Court Justices are all mentioned, and their roles in getting the Fourth Amendment nullified are presented in excruciating detail. This book highlights how the sacred rights of the Castle Doctrine and the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 have all been circumnavigated. This is a must read for all Americans regardless of their political affiliation.

If You Really, Really, Really Want To Be On A SWAT Team, You Probably Shouldn't Be

Chances are somewhere in America today, a SWAT team will arrive at a private residence. They'll throw flash-bang grenades and kick in the door; they'll force occupants to the floor at gunpoint and start tearing the place apart. They're will be profanity and screaming. They may kill the family dog, pitbull or poodle. And if they don't find anything, or it turns out they came to the wrong address, too bad. You're not going to get an apology.

This is the state of policing in America in 2013, says Radley Balko in his new book "Rise of the Warrior Cop." Across the country, law enforcement is turning to SWAT team and other specalized units not for their original purpose of providing rapid response to hostage situations and standoffs, but to serve drug warrants, enforce regulatory issues, and quell political dissent. Police are rapidly accumulating military weapons, armored vehicles, military-style uniforms and an "us against them" attitude that has resulted in wrongful arrests, property damage, injuries, and even deaths.

While many people have become aware of the militarization of law enforcement since 2001, Balko shows this process began in earnest about 40 years ago, when Richard Nixon decided to exploit the white, middle-class Silent Majority's fears of increasing drug use and crime. The "drug war' and now the "war on terror" has led to a steady erosion of our Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable search and seizure and the "Castle Doctrine," the idea that we are safe from government intrusion in our homes without serious cause.

Balko traces this history from the roots of the Castle Doctrine in British common law right up into the present day. He looks at the shift in mentality from the community policing model to the military model, where the very citizens the police are sworn to protect become potential threats to be approached with lethal force. He also shows the reality of "mission creep," where there very fact that you have SWAT team - or a tank - means you really want to use them, even in situations where it shouldn't be used. He ends with some commonsense recommendations for change - even as he admits none of them are likely to come to pass in the current political climate.

It's enlightening, it's frightening, and it's something every American should take the time to read.

No, seriously: A must-read

As always, Balko is alternately infuriating and terrifying, as he details the slow, incremental evolution in our police forces. This is not a "Cops are bad" screed, but rather a "Cops are important and powerful, so we need to pay attention to how they're being trained, equipped and used" warning flare. Well-written by arguably the leading journalist expert on the subject and based on years of following the topic, this is a very powerful and important book that'll make you look at the next picture of a cop in "riot gear" with a different eye.

All-time classic -- a "desert island book"

Paul Cohen's "Set Theory and the Continuum Hypothesis" is not only the best technical treatment of his solution to the most notorious unsolved problem in mathematics, it is the best introduction to mathematical logic (though Manin's "A Course in Mathematical Logic" is also remarkably excellent and is the first book to read after this one).
Although it is only 154 pages, it is remarkably wide-ranging, and has held up very well in the 37 years since it was first published. Cohen is a very good mathematical writer and his arrangement of the material is irreproachable. All the arguments are well-motivated, the number of details left to the reader is not too large, and everything is set in a clear philosophical context. The book is completely self-contained and is rich with hints and ideas that will lead the reader to further work in mathematical logic.
It is one of my two favorite math books (the other being Conway's "On Numbers and Games"). My copy is falling apart from extreme overuse.

Definitive and Brilliant

This is still the definitive work on set theory and the continuum hypothesis. Although extremely terse, it is wonderfully clear and unburdened by the technical and pedantic details that doom many books in the subject. If you cannot track this down right now be patient, the American Mathematical Society is going to be reprinting it.

Professor Cohen passed away in March of 2007, but thankfully this book remains as a testament to his genius. Originally trained as an analyst, he began working on the continuum hypothesis knowing almost nothing about logic or set theory. Within two years he mastered the subject and solved the greatest outstanding problem in the field (and arguably in all of mathematics). Read this book if you want to understand one of the deepest ideas in all of human thought.

A readable and approachable book on set theory and cardinal numbers

As a work of science, "Set Theory and the Continuum Hypothesis" stands on a par with Darwin's "On the Origin of Species". First, like Darwin's book, Cohen's work is a profound contribution to its field; second it is also accessible to any educated and interested reader, although with some effort.

This edition is a reproduction of the first edition. You might be shocked by the type-this is a plain, typewritten document with no illustrations (I find it charming)-but Paul Cohen's crystal clear prose makes the book eminently readable.

=WHAT YOU NEED=

This is a graduate level book but you don't need to be a graduate student in mathematics to understand it. You do need a laymen's interest in mathematics; for instance you should enjoy reading Euclid, Ian Stewart, Douglas Hoftstadter, Martin Gardner. If you've enjoyed Douglas Hofstadter's "G�del, Escher, and Bach" then there is no reason you can't understand this book.

First, Cohen gives a barebones but complete introduction to formal logic and logical notation.

Then he describes formal set theory, known as Zemerlo Frankel set theory, the foundation of all mathematics as it stands today.

Having spent half the book on the necessary background, Cohen arrives to his main topic, the Continuum Hypothesis and whether it is true or false.

=WHAT COHEN SAYS=

ST&CH proves that a long standing problem in mathematics (the Continuum Hypothesis) has no solution. What does this mean?

Most mathematicians believe in a scaled down version of Hilbert's Programme. Hilbert hoped that all of mathematics followed from a small collection of definitions and axioms, much like all of geometry was once believed to follow from Euclid's five axioms. Formal set theory, as defined by Zemerlo and Frankel, seemed to provide all the axioms needed for this task. However Kurt G�del proved that the programme is impossible to realize: any formal system will have propositions that are possible to state but impossible to prove. In other words, no set of axioms can completely define all of mathematics.

Paul Cohen proved that the Continuum Hypothesis is one such statement. But what is this hypothesis? It's about cardinal numbers. A cardinal is a property of a set; specifically it says how many elements there are in a set. For example, the cardinal for the set of all positive odd integers smaller than ten is five because the set {1, 3, 5, 7, 9} has five elements in it.

What about infinite sets? The simplest infinite set we know is the set of Natural Numbers, call it N, and N={1,2,3, ...} . N has an infinite number of elements. What about if we add zero as an element and call the new set N*? Do we get a bigger set? In one way, N* is "bigger" than N because it has all the elements N has but it also has an extra element, "0". But that's not the right way to think about big or small when we talking about sets. We want to know if the cardinal of N* is bigger than the cardinal of N. It isn't.

It's easy to see this. Let's create a new set made up of all the possible ways of writing words with the letter "a" and call this set A. Well, obviously A={a, aa, aaa, aaaa, aaaa, ....}. Now it's obvious that A does not contain N or N*, and vice versa. But can we say A is smaller than or bigger than or the same size as N or N*? Yes we can. Let's start with the natural numbers N. We can say 1 is the first element of N, that 2 is the second element of N, that 3 is the third, and so on. Likewise, we can say a is the first element of A, aa is the second element of A, aaa, is the third, and so on.

Now, bear with me here. We can also say that 0 is the first element of N*, 1 is the second element of N*, 2 is the third element of N*, and so on. So A, N, and N* seem to all have an infinite number of elements that can all be listed, or put in a one-to-one correspondence with each other. They are of the same size, they have the same cardinal, and we call that cardinal number Aleph Null (א is a Hebrew letter). We also say that sets with cardinal Aleph Null are countable, because we can count all their elements one after the other.

The set of positive and negative whole numbers, Z, is also countable. We think of Z={..., -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3,...} but we can also write Z={0, 1,-1, 2, -2, 3, -3,...} and it's now easy to see that Z is countable. Surprisingly, the set of all rational numbers (Q, the set of all fractions and whole numbers) is also countable. A rational number is a ratio of two whole numbers, a/b where b is never 0. We can certainly list all pairs of whole numbers in a set called P={(0,1), (1,1), (0,-1), (1,-1),(-1,1), (-1, -1), (0,2),(1,2),(2,2),(-1,2),...}. Since many of these pairs reduce to the same thing, for example (1,2) and (2,4) are both the same as 0.5, Q is a subset of P. So if P is countable, Q is countable.

But what about other numbers? The set of real numbers, called R, is the set of all numbers that can be represented by a point on a line. All the rational numbers (Q) can be represented by a point on a line, but there are many numbers on the line that are not rational. The square root of two or Pi are two famous examples. Are all the numbers on the line countable? It turns out that they are NOT countable. No matter how you list them, you will always find a number that cannot fit anywhere in the list you made. The set R is not countable, so we say it is uncountable.

It is in this sense that we say the set of Real Numbers is bigger than the set of Natural Numbers. We say that the cardinal of R is Aleph One. The Continuum Hypothesis states that there are no cardinals between Aleph Null and Aleph One; that there is no such thing as a set that is bigger than the Natural Numbers but smaller than the Real Numbers.

We owe the above discoveries to a nineteenth century German mathematician named Georg Cantor. He first stated the Continuum Hypothesis and he spent years trying unsuccessfully to prove it. In the 1930s, Kurt G�del proved that if you assumed that the Hypothesis was true, you did not contradict formal set theory.

In 1964 Paul Cohen proved that if you assumed the Hypothesis was false, you did not contradict formal set theory either. And so he shows that in the context of set theory the Continuum Hypothesis is unprovable.

What is now the way forward? Cohen thinks that one day we will feel the Hypothesis is obviously false. (He underlines the word "obviously".) This means that set theory will have to be perfected, perhaps by adding a single simple axiom that is "obvious" and that results, as a consequence, in a proof that the Hypothesis is false. But with the same humility we find in Darwin, he leaves the problem for future generations to solve.

Nothing more than a subset of online API docs

Really had high hopes for this title, after examining the table of contents. But the contents are bare bones, and it appeared to me, to be a partial subset of the online API documentation for jQuery and some relevant plugins. Yes, there is a rudimentary chapter on Javascript, but it adds nothing to the knowledge store of an already experienced developer, and would be totally insufficient (unlike Crockford's *Javascript: The Good Parts*, which the chapter specifically references).

Furthermore, there are some major print annoyances -- such as every code listing includes a large text and graphic image indicating code blurb is available for download at wrox.com. Was that really necessary? Could not that have been specified in the book introduction/prefix, where to download the example code? And most of the examples were so simple and basic, even more remedial than the online docs at [...] (or at any of the plugin topics like jQuery templates, QUnit, etc....).

I really feel ripped off of $20-30 for purchasing this title, cannot recall the exact amount I paid on the Amazon order...

More of an Introduction to jQuery

Found this book more than an introduction to jQUERY than anything else. It does cover a wide range of content, but it does not seem to go into depth as much as I would've liked. I think this book would be a fine choice for someone who doesn't have a great deal of knowledge or experience with jQuery.
Some reviewers have noted that there is a wealth of information about jQuery online and someone looking at a particular area of jQuery would probably be better served going online. The book strength lies in that it offers a wealth of information that the reader may not have thought about before. For me it was chapter 14 - "Unit Testing with Qunit".
I would give this book between three stars and four stars because of the lack of depth on the subject matters.
I would recommend this book for someone who is looking for a good introduction into jQuery before they move on to all the online resources that are available.

There are better resources online and this book has little to offer a person who actually knows jQuery and is looking for an advanced resource to better their skills.

If you haven't worked with jQuery before then you will benefit from reading this book but if you have, save your money and do your research online.

I would have rated this book higher but I feel there are too many five star reviews so I'm rating it one star.

The cases themselves present everyday examples of the ways in which racism, sexism, homophobia and heterosexism, class inequities, language bias, religious-based oppression, and other equity and diversity concerns affect students, teachers, families, and other members of our school communities. They involve classroom issues that are relevant to all grade levels and all content areas, allowing significant flexibility in how and with whom they are used. Although organized topically, the intersection of these issues are stressed throughout the cases, reflecting the multi-faceted way they play out in real life. All cases conclude with a series of questions to guide discussion and a section of facilitator notes, called points for consideration. This unique feature provides valuable insight for understanding the complexities of each case.

Great book by Gorski and Pothini

Gorski and his co-authors write great books, and this one is one of my favorites! I highly recommend it for students and colleagues. While the cases are designed to bring attention to troubling issues pertaining to bias and discrimination, the book itself is actually a joy to read. As odd as it may sound, in some ways it reminded me of the old Encyclopedia Brown books; I would read a case, attempt to answer the questions, and then turn to the back of the book for the authors' points of consideration. However, the authors also provide information with regard to using the case method, and they provide really good references such as "The Art and Craft of Case Writing" by Naumes and Naumes. Frankly, I'm inspired to try my own hand at writing cases with regard to other areas of education to use with students. Additionally, I would like to see even more teaching with cases in education. This text also helped to improve my own understanding with regard to diversity and social justice issues that I had not previously considered. I would definitely recommend using this case study book with education majors as a supplemental class text, which is what I used in conjunction with "Affirming Diversity" by Nieto and Bode. Admittedly, some students may object to the price for a book that may seem "thin," but it is well worth the cost for the learning it can facilitate through group discussions and other means of instruction. As an instructor, I also came to rely on "Cultivating Social Justice Teachers" by Gorski et al., which I also recommend.

This is my second semester using this book of case ...

This is my second semester using this book of case studies along with ethical reasoning questions, so that my students (future teachers), see how the various topics in our Diversity in Elementary Education course show up in our schools in problematic ways. I want them to have practice thinking through the multiple perspectives, outcomes, etc that each case present, so they are truly thinking deeply about situations in terms of equity instead of just making rash decisions.
This is truly a ideal way to bridge theory and practice in this work that is often missing.
